BANGOR, Maine – The Husson University women's basketball team saw its season come to an end on Sunday afternoon in the North Atlantic Conference semifinals, as the second-seeded Eagles were upset on their homecourt by the number three seed, the University of Maine at Farmington, by a final of 64-40 at Newman Gymnasium.
The Beavers (20-7) set the tone defensively from the opening tip, holding the Eagles (17-9) to 3-of-19 shooting in the first quarter. Husson battled on the glass early, but Farmington carried a 9-6 advantage into the second period.
The visitors seized control in the second quarter, connecting on 8-of-17 shots and knocking down a pair of three-pointers. A late three-pointer just before halftime pushed the margin to 29-11 at the break.
Husson showed resilience coming out of the locker room. The Eagles shot 38.5% in the third quarter and generated offense at the free-throw line, finishing 5-for-6 in the period. Senior Danielle Dow sparked the run with a pair of inside baskets, while fellow senior Laela Martinez attacked the rim to help trim the deficit. Despite the improved offensive flow, Farmington maintained a 47-26 lead heading into the final quarter.
In the fourth, Husson continued to compete, converting 6-of-6 from the free-throw line, but Farmington answered with efficient play in the paint and timely scoring to secure the 24-point win.
Martinez led the Eagles with 15 points, adding four assists and four steals. Sophomore Saige Evans recorded a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds, while Dow added eight points and a team-high 12 rebounds. Husson shot just 22.2% from the field, but converted 85.7% from the foul line in the contest.
Jessica Dow paced Farmington with 24 points on 9-of-12 shooting, while Jaydn Pingree added 13 points and 10 rebounds. The Beavers held a 49-41 edge on the boards and scored 36 points in the paint.
With the loss, the season has come to an end for the Husson University women's basketball team.
