Husson Surges Past UMF 8-3 to Stave off Elimination

Box Score

CASTLETON, Vt. – The University of Maine at Farmington held a 2-0 lead after three innings but Husson wouldn't go down quietly as it scored three runs in two separate frames on the way to an 8-3 victory to stave off elimination in the North Atlantic Conference Tournament Friday afternoon.

Robert Graff tossed a complete game for the Eagles, scattering nine hits over 9.0 innings while allowing three unearned runs with two strikeouts. J.T. Whitten provided power in the middle of the lineup with three hits and two RBI, including a solo home run.

For UMF, Dustin McCrossin led the offense with three hits and two RBI while Kyle Peterson took the loss. Peterson went 7.0 innings and allowed 11 hits and seven earned runs while striking out two batters.

The Beavers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the third inning. Each of the first three runners in the frame reached to load the bases for McCrossin. He singled to right center, scoring a pair. However, UMF wouldn't get anymore has Graff got three consecutive outs to escape more trouble.

In the top of the fourth Brendan Gendreau led off with a double and Kyle Bishop followed with a win. Two batters later, Adam Wilson belted a home run over the left field fence to capture a 3-2 lead.

Husson added to its lead in the top of the sixth. Bishop and Whitten singled and another single loaded the bases with one out. The Eagles then earned a run on a fielder's choice to make it 4-2 before a groundout ended the inning.

UMF countered with a run of its own in the bottom of the frame as Ethan Coulin reached on a single and then came around to score on an error and a wild pitch.

In the eighth the Eagles broke it open with three more runs for a 7-3 advantage. Whitten led off the inning with a solo home run and each of the next two batters both reached base. One run scored on a wild pitch and an RBI single by Jordan Carter plated the third run to make it a four-run game.

Husson added a single run in the ninth on an RBI double by Whitten to provide the final five-run margin.

With the victory, Husson(26-19) advances to play Saturday at 12 pm against the loser of Castleton against Thomas, which starts at 9 am and the Beavers end their season with a overall record of 17-20.
