Husson Baseball splits NAC doubleheader with Lyndon State

Lyndonville, Vt.- Husson baseball took on Lyndon State in a doubleheader Sunday afternoon. The Eagles split the two games coming out on the losing side of things in game one 12-6, but the Eagles offense would come alive in game two helping them pick up a 6-3 victory. Husson won three out of their four games this weekend to Lyndon State and now sit at 16-4 in the North Atlantic Conference and have a 21-13 overall record.

Game 1: Husson 6, Lyndon State 12

Husson would find the scoreboard first as Kyle Bishop singled, but would reach second base on an error that would score Brandon Gendreau putting them up 1-0.

Lyndon's offense came out strong to start the game as they plated three runs in the bottom of the first inning on singles by Ian Sackett and Michael Cartularo that would score Andre Eason and Reece Tanguay. Nate Stewart would reach base on an error by J.T. Whitten at first, that error would score Sackett to take the early 3-1 lead to end the first inning.  

In the top of the second inning Husson would even things up at 3-3 when Ryan Rebar grounded out to the short stop scoring Jordan Carter. Gendreau would hit a sacrifice fly to left field scoring Seth Freudenberger.

The Hornets would break the game open with a six-run third inning. Tanguay had a two-run single in the inning while. Eason, Kevin Tufo and Ryan Cordeiro singled home one run each making it 9-3 at the end of 3 innings of play.

The Eagles would do their best to make a comeback scoring one run in the top of the fourth on a Gendreau single that would plate Rebar making it 9-4. The Eagles would score one more run in the fifth inning when Carter hit a sacrifice fly to right field scoring Whitten making it 9-5.

The Hornets would add to their lead in the bottom of the sixth inning, when three more runs would come around to score thanks to a two run double by Dylan Newton scoring Sackett and Tanguay. Newton scored later in the inning when Mike LoVerde singled making it 12-5 after six innings,

The Eagles would score one more run in the top of the seventh when Rebar reached base on an error bringing home Cam Archer to make it 12-6.

Ben Walls threw the first three innings for Husson, giving up nine runs, seven earned on 13 hits, while walking no one and striking out one. Walls fell to 3-2 on the year.

James Mundy picked up the win for the Lyndon as he five inning allowing five runs on seven hits and four walk, while recording four strikeouts. Mundy improves to 3-1 on the season.

Game 2: Husson 6, Lyndon 3

Lyndon State would start game two right where they left off in game one scoring three quick runs in the bottom of the first inning when Newton would hit a two run single scoring Tanguay and Eason.  Newton would come around to score on a Stewart single making it 3-0 after one inning of play.

Husson would respond scoring two runs in the third and three runs in the fourth inning to take the lead when Rebar, Curran, Freudenberger, Curran and Gendreau would score making it 5-3.

The Eagles would add one more run in the seventh inning when Rebar hit a RBI single bringing home Archer making it 6-3.

Brandon Reilly picked up the win as he went the distance for the Eagles allowing only three earned runs on eight hits while striking out three batters in seven innings. Reilly improves to 3-2 on the year.

Picking up the loss for Lyndon was Davis Guyer who pitched three and two-thirds innings, allowing five runs on three hits while walking six and striking out two. Guyer falls to 1-3 on the year.

The Eagles return to action on Tuesday, April 21st when they play Bates on the road starting at 3:30.
