Eagles' and Polar Bears Split, 1-0 & 5-11

Bangor, ME - It was Senior night at the Winkin Complex as eight Husson Seniors were honored before game 1 of a double header against Bowdoin College.  The Eagles and Polar Bears spilt the doubleheader as the Husson would take game 1, 1-0 in 9 innings and the Polar Bears would take the night cap 11-5.

Game 1 - Husson 1, Bowdoin 0 in 9 innings:

The pitching was the story in game one as both pitching staffs held each other scoreless until the bottom of the ninth with one out, when the Eagles scored the lone run. Brandon Gendreau hit an infield single down the third base line that ended up in no man's land scoring Seth Freudenberger from third base with the winning run.

The Eagles had a chance to win the game in the bottom of the eighth but the Polar Bears' defense came up big. With the winning run on second with two outs, Jordan Carter hit a single up the middle to Peter Cimini who was playing centerfield threw a bullet to Chris Nadeau, who taged out Kyle Bishop at home plate.

Dennis O'Neil threw the first eight innings of shutout ball for the Eagles, giving up just four singles and walking two batters while striking out six. Steve Hanscom pitched a perfect top of the ninth to pick up his first career win. 

Richard Arms took the loss for the Polar Bears, their fifth pitcher of the day. Arms pitched a third of inning, allowed one run on one hit and walking two batters.

Game 2 - Bowdoin 11, Husson 5:

The Polar Bears would get on the board early in the first inning as Erik Jacobsen scored on a RBI triple to center field by Aaron Rosen. Rosen would score Bowdoin's second run of inning on a fielding error by the shortstop and Chad Martin would extend the lead to 3-0 on a wild pitch.

Husson would tie the game up in the bottom of the first on three hits and one Polar Bear error. Gendreau would hit the first double of the inning to left center sending Andrew Curran to third base but Curran would score the Eagles' first run of game on a throwing error by Cimini. On the very next pitch Kyle Bishop hit a RBI double to left center send Gendreau home with the second run. Bishop would score the tying run on a RBI single by Jordan Carter.

Bowdoin retook the lead in the top of the second on a RBI triple by Sam Canales scoring Nadeau and a two-run single by Rosen scoring Cimini and Canales.

The Polar Bears added four more runs in the top of the fourth on a RBI single by Jacobsen, a two-run triple by Chad Martin and a sacrifice fly by Bjorn Hansen.

The Eagles got one of those runs back in the bottom half of the fourth when Duncan Finigan, who entered the game in relief of starting pitcher Connor Rooney walked Curran.

Bowdoin extended their lead to 11-4 in the top of sixth when Martin launched a Corey Mongiat pitch over the left field fence.

Husson added one more run in the bottom of the seventh when Christian Corneil doubled down the right field line scoring Bishop. Kyle Stanley would get Carter to groundout to second to end game to pick up the three and two thirds of inning save.

Taking the loss was Tommy Burns, who pitched two innings, giving up 4 hits, allowing 6 runs which only four were earned, walking two while striking out two. The win went to Connor Rooney, who pitched three innings, allowing 4 hits and 3 runs, walking none and striking out three.

Husson's record now stands at 18-12 and the Polar Bears at 9-14.

The Eagles return to action on Saturday when they travel to Lyndonville, Vermont for NAC doubleheader with Lyndon State and Bowdoin is back on the diamond on Friday when they host Trinity (CT).
