Volleyball Drops Two In Connecticut

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Hartford, Conn. – The Trinity College volleyball team recorded its third sweep of the season on Saturday afternoon, blanking Husson, 3-0, in non-conference action inside Oosting Gymnasium. With their third straight victory, the Bantams improved to 9-4 overall, while the Eagles dropped their second in a row away from home to fall to 5-13. Trinity played well surrendering no more than 14 points in any game scoring a 25-13, 25-14, 25-11 triumph.

Trinity had a balanced offensive attack as a trio of players recorded six or more kills. Junior tri-captains Kate Giddens (Ranchos Palos Verdes, Calif.) and Hunter Drews (Clifton Park, N.Y.) had nine and six kills, respectively. First-year outside hitter Anne Hay (New York, N.Y.) had one of the strongest games of her young collegiate career, tallying seven kills to go along with four digs on the defensive end. The setting duo of sophomore Randi Whitham (South Weymouth, Mass.) and junior Gina Buzzelli (Cheshire, Conn.) continued their steady play with 14 and 13 assists, respectively.

Senior Alexandra deHertogh (Cumberland, RI) paced the Husson attack registering five of the teams 10 kills on the afternoon. Sophomore Kristen Atwood (Cumberland, ME) and first-year Bailey Cote (Biddeford, ME) each added two kills apiece for the Eagles. Setter Nia Arranaga (San Jose, CA) dished out five assists for Husson as well.

On the defensive end, the Bantams were led once again by Giddens with 12 digs, while first-year outside hitter Grace Metry (Grosse Pointe Park, Mich.) added nine of her own. Arranaga led the way for Husson with nine digs and a quartet of Eagles added one block assist apiece.

Trinity had arguably its best game of the season from the service line registering 12 aces. Junior middle hitter Katie Steuber (Darien, Conn.) had a match-best five aces, while Giddens added four.

The Eagles were bested in the second match of the day as well, as Wesleyan was able to sweep them in straight sets.

Husson will be back in action on Tuesday when they travel to Bates College in Lewiston for a match at 7 p.m.
