Box Score Waterville, ME – Erin Maguire had assists on all three goals as the Colby College field hockey team held on for a 3-1 victory against Husson University in non-conference play Wednesday night at Bill Alfond Field.
The Mules move to 4-3 overall heading into Saturday's noon home game with fifth-ranked Middlebury College. Husson drops to 2-5 overall and will play at Thomas College on Saturday at 1 p.m.
The Eagles battled Colby to a 0-0 halftime tie and gave the Mules fits in the final 15 minutes of the game.
The Mules scored at 47:15 after a foul on the right side. Maguire quickly began the possession after the foul and stick-handled past some Husson defenders. Her cross in front was banged in by Misha Strage for her fourth goal of the season.
First-year Meredith Keenan gave the Mules a 2-0 lead less than four minutes later at 51:01. She redirected a pass from Maguire into the right corner of the cage for her second goal of the season.
The Eagles came alive and started putting major pressure on Colby in the final 15 minutes. Husson broke through on a play that began off a penalty corner. The ball was banged around in front before Taylor Lovley (Newport, ME) got a stick on it for the score at 59:24.
Husson almost scored again about 30 seconds later, but Colby goalie Sarah Evans made a nice stop on a shot by Britt Mellor (Belfast, ME).
The Mules scored their insurance goal on a nice counter attack, with Megan Fortier doing most of the work. She stick-handled for a good distance, beat a defender, and slid a ball to Maguire. Her blast to the right corner was deflected in by teammate Caitlin Guiney for the goal.
Evans made five of her six saves in the second half, while Husson goalie Abby Greenleaf (Newfield, ME) also stopped six shots. Colby had a 21-8 advantage in shots, but Husson had seven of its eight shots go on goal.
Husson's head coach Madeline Hoeppner said after the game, "The girls played together and showed a lot of heart. We worked as a unit and utilized our week off. Our passing was incredible, and we just have to work on defensive awareness."
