Eagles Fly Past Mariners with Seven Home Runs

Castine, ME - Husson won a pair of North Atlantic Conference softball games against Maine Maritime Wednesday. The Eagles won the first game 8-0 and took the nightcap 21-8. The Eagles improved to 4-0 NAC, 12-4 overall, while the Mariners fell to 0-4, 2-8.

Game 1: Husson 8, Maine Maritime 0

Lyndsay Merrill gave the Eagles an early 1-0 lead with a solo shot to left center field. Husson made it 2-0 in the third when an error plated Mallory Conary before adding four on the board in the fifth inning.

Chelsea Brennan's single in the fifth brought in Merrill and Conary and Casey Lopes double scored both Brennan and Allie Hill. Merrill belted her second home run that scored Hayley Spiers to make it 8-0.

Hayley Rae paced the MMA offense with two hits.

Amanda Ryan improved to 5-3 with nine strike outs and scattered six hits in the complete game shutout and Abby Yeo fell to 1-4 for the Mariners.

Game 2: Husson 21, Maine Maritime 8

The teams combined for seven home runs in the second game in a contest that was fairly close for the first five frames.

Husson opened with a 2-0 lead on a double by Casey Lopes. The Mariners answered in the bottom of first when Erica Taylor launched a three-run that scored Rae and Andi Flanneryand gave Maine Maritime a 3-2 lead.

The Eagles tacked on four in the fourth on a single by Schultz, a double by Spiers, a fielder's choice and an error. The Mariners made it a one-run game, 6-5, in the fifth when Flannery stroked a RBI single and later scored on an error.

Husson added six more in the sixth on home runs from Merrill and Brennan, a triple by Conary, a double from Spiers and an error. Yeo belted her second round tripper of the season in the bottom of the sixth for MMA.

The Eagles started the seventh with consecutive home runs by Kayla and Lyndsay Merrill, singles from Jess Poulin and Kayla Merrill, a sacrifice hit by Conary, a wild pitch and a two-run jack by Hill.

Maine Maritime added two in the bottom of the frame when Taylor doubled and Yeo singled.

Kayla Merrill struck out 10 in seven innings to improve to 7-1, while Taylor pitched 5.1 innings and fell to 1-4.

Eagles' head coach Kristie Hawkins said, "Today our offense was strong, and it was nice to see it really break through the way it did. The Merrill sisters come out to play in a big way. We are hoping to carry this fire into the rest of the season, and if we do than great things will happen. It was nice to see everyone on board and in sync up to the plate tonight. Everyone contributed and that's all we can ask for."

Husson will travel to the University of Southern Maine on Thursday for a 3:30/5:30 doubleheader and will then host Lyndon State on Saturday and Johnson State on Sunday.
