Box Score 2 Bangor, ME- After shutting out Lyndon State in doubleheader action on Saturday, the Husson University baseball team continued having success in another twin-bill on Sunday. Despite some defensive miscues and better play from the Hornets, the Eagles were able to take both games and sweep the season series against Lyndon in exciting fashion, improving to 23-13 on the season and 17-4 in North Atlantic Conference play.
Game 1- Husson 6, Lyndon 3
After two scoreless innings by each side to start the day, the Eagles struck first due to sloppy play by the Hornet defense.
It started with an infield single by Cody McInnis (Bangor, ME), and was followed by and a fielder's choice by Dylan Foster (Oakland, ME) in which McInnis beat-out the force play at second. With two men on base, Brandon Gendreau (Brewer, ME) bunted safely due to an error by the Hornet's first baseman, and McInnis came all the way home from second giving Husson a 1-0 lead.
J.T. Whitten (Waterville, ME) came up to bat next, ripping the ball back to the Lyndon pitcher Jeff Williams who was unable to handle the play which scored Foster from third. The Eagles added one more in the inning on a fielder's choice from Kyle Bishop (Waterville, ME) that brought home Gendreau and made it 3-0.
Husson would have continued success, tacking on two more in the fifth on a hard hit line drive that resulted in an inside-the-park home run by Foster, his first of the season.
The Hornets would answer back in the fifth inning with two outs and two on, when shortstop Tyler Pelletier singled up the middle to give Lyndon their first run. After a walk to load the bases, Quinn Rambo and Ian Murdock hit back-to-back RBI singles to reduce the Eagle's lead to two runs at 5-3.
Despite the threat, the Eagles maintained control as Jordan Carter (Ellsworth, ME) led off the bottom of the sixth with a triple and Foster knocked him in for his third RBI of the day to finish off the scoring.
Husson starter Brandon Reilly (Pemaquid, ME) went six innings while yielding three earned runs, and senior Zachary Yates (Newport, RI) came in to pitch a perfect seventh inning to wrap up the save. The win improves Reily's record to 3-3 on the season, while Lyndon Pitcher Jeff Williams falls to 1-5.
Game 2- Husson 6, Lyndon 5 (10 innings)
The Eagles got off to a quick start in game two, gaining a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a triple from Josh Gaudette (Waterville, ME) that scored Whitten who reached base on a fielder's choice, and Bishop who reached on a dropped third strike.
Miscues plagued the Eagles in the second inning when starting pitcher Dennis O'Neil (Mount Desert, ME) hit Devon Rollins with the bases loaded and a passed ball scored one more to tie the game.
The Hornets added another in the third when Ian Murdock hit a sac fly to score Mike Cartularo and give Lyndon their first lead of the weekend.
After the Hornets took a 5-4 lead into the bottom of the seventh, Dennis Meehan (Gardiner, ME) walked with the bases loaded to tie the game at 5-5, and the game would wind up going into extras.
Relief pitching for both sides was dominant in the late innings, as Casey Estes (Old Town, ME) came in to pitch for the Eagles in the seventh inning, gave up a hit in the frame, and then retired the next eleven batters he faced.
Brandon Flood was also dealing for the Hornets, coming into pitch in the eighth and retiring the first six batters he faced, but he would run into trouble in the 10th.
After getting two quick outs, Flood walked Seth Freudenberger (Bangor, ME) and McInnis to put himself in a jam. Foster then roped a one-hopper to first base and beat out the throw, while Freudenberger came racing home from second to seal the Eagles' come-from-behind victory.
Despite the four-game weekend sweep the Eagles will still end up going into the playoffs as the second seed behind Castleton, and Lyndon will also qualify in the fourth seed.
Husson has two more games to play in the regular season with a doubleheader matchup against non-conference opponent Colby College set for Tuesday night at the Winkin Complex at 5 and 7:30 p.m.
