Box Score 2 Bangor, ME- It was a wild rainy day at the Winkin Complex as the Husson University Baseball team shut out Lyndon State in both games of Saturday's double header. Lyndon pitchers struggled controlling the ball as 10 Husson batters were hit on the day. The wins improve Husson's record to 21-13 for the season and 15-4 in conference play.
Game One- Husson 6, Lyndon 0
The Eagles had everything going for them in the first matchup with a team effort behind the plate, and strong pitching from Pat McEwen (Brewer, ME). Dylan Foster (Oakland, ME) got things started for the eagles when after reaching base with a single, he stole second and went to third on a balk. From then on, the Eagles played small ball making pitcher Ian Sackett (Lyndonville, VT) uncomfortable all game while having issues with runners on base. Foster eventually scored on a double from Brandon Gendreau (Brewer, ME) who also scored later in the inning giving the Eagles a 2-0 lead.
Sackett continued to struggle on the mound, hitting two straight batters in the second inning after already hitting Dennis Meehan (Gardiner, ME) in the first, but poor base running led to little success for the Eagles. In the top of the third, Gendreau was the fourth Husson player to be hit by a pitch, eventually scoring on a ground ball out from Meehan to give a 3-0 lead.
The Eagles would eventually tack on 3 more runs later in the game, but the key to the victory was the shut down performance from McEwen. McEwen gave up 3 hits in 7 innings, with no walks or runs allowed, and improving to 3-3 on the season. Tyler Pelletier (St. Albans, VT) was the loan Hornet to have minimal success off of McEwen singing twice in the game and having 2 of the Hornet's 3 hits. McEwen's counter part Sackett, ended up going 5 innings giving up 9 hits in 5 innings with one walk and three Earned Runs, falling to 2-1.
Game Two- Husson 11, Lyndon 0
Game two was very similar to game one, but with even more Eagle success, and even less control for Hornet pitchers. Hornet mistakes brought the Eagles to a quick start due to 2 hit batters in a row at the start of the game, who both came to score on a bases loaded triple from Josh Gaudette (Waterville, ME). Gaudette also came in to score on a ground ball single by Andrew Curran (Hampstead, NH) to give the Eagles a 4-0 lead.
The Hornet's starter Mason Brewer (Wicasset, ME) was having a tough time stopping the Eagles, as he gave up 4 more runs in the bottom of the second while also hitting two more batters. It was a long game for the Hornets as the Eagles continued piling it on, adding 2 more runs in the 3rd on a J.T. Whitten (Waterville, ME) double. Brewer pitched 5 innings giving up 9 hits and 9 Earned Runs and falling to 2-3 on the season. With a healthy lead, Eagles pitcher Tim Nason (Bucksport, ME) was able to comfortably shut down the Hornets going 7 innings giving giving up 4 hits, 0 Earned runs, and 4 strikeouts improving to 5-0. The Eagles ended up with 11 runs in the shut out to take the win.
The Eagles look to continue their success tomorrow against the Hornets in another double header at the Winkin Complex; starting pitches are at 12 and 2:30.
