Box Score Henniker, NH – New England College women's basketball guard Amber Jackson (Warren, OH) would sink two foul shots in the final seconds of the game lifting the Pilgrims past the visiting Husson University Eagles, 63-61, Friday evening.
With the win the Pilgrims improve to 10-10 overall and 7-6 in North Atlantic Conference play. The loss evens the Eagles overall record at 10-10 and fall to 9-4 in conference play.
The two teams would battle back-and-forth through an opening half that would see four ties and eight lead changes. A three-pointer by Stephanie Parker (Wilder, VT) followed by a layup from Breana Ramirez (Patterson, NJ) would give the Pilgrims their largest lead of the half up 25-19 with 5:22 on the clock. The Eagles would respond using a 7-0 run to erase the deficit and take the 26-25 lead just minutes later. Husson would lead 32-29 in the final minutes of the first half but NEC would close out the final minute 3-for-4 from the foul line knotting the game at 32-32 heading into the intermission.
Husson would build their largest lead of the game midway through the second half up 50-41, but NEC would storm back knotting the game at 59-59 with just 1:39 remaining in regulation. The Pilgrims would take a two point lead with 13 seconds on the clock thanks to a pair of foul shot by Kayla Lawlor (Cocoa Beach, FL). Husson would answer with a bucket Denae Johnson (Bangor, ME) at the seven second mark but the Eagles would foul as the Pilgrims would head up the court sending Jackson to the line with two seconds on the clock. Jackson would sink both layups and Husson would muster a half court shot that would sail wide giving NEC the 63-61 victory.
NEC's Taylor Burgess (Randallstown, MD) finished with a team-high 13 points to go along with a four rebounds. Forward Kiley Williams (Salem, UT) recorded a double-double on the evening with 10 points and 10 rebounds, while Stephanie Parker chipped in 12 points for the Pilgrims.
Husson's Chandler Guerette (Presque Isle, ME) finished with a game-high 18 points. Rebecca Young (Concord, VT) was the only other Eagle in double figures finishing with 14 points on 7-for-10 shooting and grabbed a team-high six rebounds. Victoria McIntyre (Mars Hill, ME) also grabbed six rebounds for Husson and also picked off a game-high four steals.
NEC returns to action Saturday, Feb. 8 when they host conference opponent Maine Maritime Academy. Husson will hit the court again on Saturday, Feb. 8 when they travel to battle conference foe Colby-Sawyer College.
