Husson Volleyball Drops Two At U-Mass Dartmouth

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

North Dartmouth, MA -  The Husson Eagles volleyball team came into Saturday's doubleheader looking to right the ship after a two-match losing skid against two tough out-of-conference opponents.

The first tilt of the day would come against the Plymouth State Panthers, who would wind up sweeping the Eagles in straight sets (25-9, 25-10, 25-13).

The second contest would be with the host U-Mass Dartmouth Corsairs, who would also down the Eagles in three games (25-13, 25-21, 25-19).

In the first match, Husson couldn't match the offensive onslaught put on by Plymouth State.  The Panthers amassed 31 kills in the three games and hit at an impressive .319 average as a team.  Plymouth State also tallied 13 aces as a team.

The Panthers were led by Katie Sylvia with nine kills and nine aces, while Gretta Buckley put away five kills and Kirsten Perrotta dished out 18 assists.

Husson was led by Lindsay Chapman (Gorham, ME) and Emma Plouffe (Frankfort, NY) with four kills apiece, while Casey Lopes (New Bedford, MA) had a double-double with 10 assists and 10 digs.

In the second match against U-Mass Dartmouth, hitting errors (12) and service-receive errors (9) would prove to be the Eagles' downfall.

Brianna Perry and Katie McEachern each had five kills for the Corsairs, while Madison Shea and Jasmine Burris had four apiece.  Christina Spinazola conducted a good offense for the winners with 17 assists.

Husson was again led by Chapman with six kills and 11 digs, while Plouffe put away four kills and Lopes had 15 assists to go along with 12 digs.  Autumn Wilber (Tuftonboro, NH) also contributed a match-high 15 digs for the Eagles.

"Today didn't pan out so well for us," Husson coach Jodie Fairbank said after the matches.  "[Both teams] were tough competition, but we made some strides and we are anxious to get into conference play soon."

With the two losses, Husson falls to 7-11 on the season.  Plymouth State improved their record to 9-4, while U-Mass Dartmouth moved to 3-10.

The Eagles' next match will be on the road on Wednesday, October 2nd, at Colby College in Waterville.  Match time is set for 7 p.m.
