Box Score Bangor, ME - Husson field hockey downed the Nor'Easters of the University of New England Sunday afternoon at home by a final of 3-2. Liz Noddin tucked away the final goal not two minutes into the extra frame.
The Eagles scored first on the day by way of Sabrina Vaillancourt from Mariah Arno, giving Vaillancourt her 51st career goal as she continues to set the all time goal mark in program history. The Husson goal 26 minutes in made it 1-0 in favor of the Eagles.
Both teams had several chances through the end of the first half, but Husson yet again capitalized on a penalty corner with time expired. Brit Mellor collected a rebound and caged Husson's second goal to lead 2-0 at the half.
The second half was a different story, however. UNE reeled off 17 shots in the half, forcing Maicee Gustin to make numerous saves. Nine and a half minutes into the second the Nor'Easters put their first tally on the board on a Casey Clark goal with an assist from Hayley Lapointe. UNE kept the pressure on and 15 minutes later, they scored again from Hannah Warren and Hanna Tavella to tie the game at 2-2.
The game moved to overtime where the six-on-six plus a goaltender format takes effect. Arno had a another chance at goal seconds in the overtime and barely pushed it wide of the cage.
Moments later the Eagles forced another scrum in front of the net and Noddin put it away for the game winner.
Gustin finished with 17 saves on 19 shots on goal for Husson while Holly Smith finished with eight saves on the 11 shots she faced on net.
The Eagles will travel to Springfield College next weekend on the seventh and eighth to play in the Zenaty Invitational. Husson will play Plymouth State at 1:15 on Saturday, while Sunday's opponent and game time is TBA.
