Box Score Bangor, ME- Husson men's lacrosse fell to non-conference opponent University of Southern Maine on Wednesday night, 11-4.
In an extremely physical game, the last minute efforts of the Eagles were not enough to overcome the early lead established by the Huskies. USM struck first, when Dan St. Peter snuck one in goal unassisted. Eagles Mitch Heaps (York, PA) countered to tie it at 1-1, off an Alex Ryan (Northfield, NH) pass.
Ryan Foley added another for USM to head into the 2nd quarter 2-1 Huskies. The 2nd and 3rd quarters were all Southern Maine as they scored 2 goals in each quarter extending their lead to 6-1.
Eddie Barrasso, Steve Ribero and St. Peter each added a goal in the final quarter before Husson's Heaps added another goal this time from Dillon Shaw (Augusta, ME). Kayle Hamilton pushed any comeback chances out of reach with 2 goals in the final 5 minutes. The Eagles were not going quietly, Shaw scored an unassisted goal with 44 seconds remaining and Brandon Corbo (Merrimack, NH) found Heaps for his third goal of the night with 24 seconds remaining.
Shaw led the way for the Eagles in groundballs, scooping up 5, while both James Seager (Gilford, NH) and Vinny Visconti (North Andover, MA) had 4 on the night.
Eagle goalkeeper John Hooper III (Wakefield, RI) stopped 8 shots, while USM goalie Ryan Hatch made 9 saves in the cage.
"This was a tough game but there is always something to learn and make us better moving forward. We came out very strong early in the game with some good offensive possessions and played solid defense. USM was able to hit some great shots and we struggled to reestablish our momentum at times," said Head Coach Sean Murphy after the game, "Everyone recognizes that we're light years ahead of where we were early in the season and we're looking forward to conference play."
With this loss the Eagles fall to 2-6 (1-0) on the season, and will play only North Atlantic Conference opponents from now on, traveling to Lyndon State and Johnson State this Saturday (April 6) and Sunday (April 7) for 1:00 PM matches at both schools.
