Box Score Waterville, ME – Husson men's lacrosse clinched the third seed in the upcoming North Atlantic Conference (NAC) playoffs and closed out their regular season with a win over Thomas College on the road on Wednesday night.
The Eagles climb to 7-8 (6-2 NAC) while the Terriers finish the season at 4-9 (3-4 NAC). With a third-place finish in the conference, Husson will be matched with Thomas again in the quarterfinals of North Atlantic Conference playoffs on Saturday.
The Terriers struggled to find the back of the net in the first half, as Husson's defense was very strong. The Eagles grabbed a 4-0 lead with goals from Brandon Corbo (Merrimack, NH), Nolan Brown (Waterford, CT), Alex Ryan (Northfield, NH), and Mitch Heaps (York, PA).
Two more Heaps goals in the second pushed the Eagle lead to six. The Terriers were finally able to strike with 3:27 left in the first half when senior Sean Machin (Brunswick, ME) drove toward the net and fired a shot for the first Terrier goal to cut the deficit to five at halftime.
The third quarter was all Husson as Heaps added another goal, along with Vinny Visconti (North Andover, MA) and Dillon Shaw (Augusta, ME). Thomas would end the game with the only goals in the fourth quarter. Matt Davis (Farmington, ME) scored off a pass from Jordan Marino (Londonberry, NH) with a man advantage and Machin scored on a man advantage also on an assist from Gunnar Shelton (Eugene, OR).
Husson was able to hold advantages in face-offs, shots, ground balls, and successful clears on Thomas to propel the victory. Heaps finished with four goals on the night and Corbo added one goal and three assists.
Eagle goalkeeper John Hooper III (Wakefield, RI) recorded 14 saves in the winning effort. Thomas goalkeeper Jesse Morkeski (Damariscotta, ME) 13 saves in his final home game in net.
Husson holds the third seed in the upcoming NAC playoffs and will host a rematch with Thomas, the sixth seed, this Saturday April 27, time TBA.
