Eagles Take Two Games from Hornets in Day 1 of Weekend Doubleheaders

Lyndonville, VT – Husson baseball swept the day series with the Lyndon State Hornets Saturday winning game one, 7-5 and game two, 10-5.

Game 1:

Brandon Gendreau (Brewer, ME) started the scoring for the Eagles in the top of the 2nd inning when he flied out to right field, scoring Kyle Bishop (Waterville, ME).

Bishop grabbed the only extra base hit of the game, getting a double and 3 RBIs on the day.

Husson scored 4 runs in the top of the 3rd and 2 more in the top of the 7th to clinch the victory over the Hornets, who scored 2 runs in a last chance effort that fell short.

Pat Thibodeau (Caribou, ME) earned the win on the mound and was a threat offensively as he pitched 5 innings giving up 1 hit, and batting 2-3 on the day, scoring 1 run on the afternoon.

Senior Captain Shawn Smith (Winterport, ME) continued his successful 2013 season going 2-4, batting in 2 runs and scoring 1 run, as well as stealing a base.  Smith also took the mound for one inning in which he gave up just 1 hit.

J.T. Whitten (Waterville, ME) added the other RBI for the Eagles, while Zachary Yates (Newport, RI) had the other stolen base.

Game 2:

The Hornets stung first with a 3 run first inning, but the Eagles didn't retreat.

Husson scored 5 runs in both the 2nd and 3rd innings. Andrew Curran (Hampstead, NH) singled, advancing Benjamin McLain (Pemaquid, ME), who reached on a pass ball, to second.  Pat Thibodeau reached on an error scoring Curran. Shawn Smith hit a grand slam in the top of the 2nd for 4 RBIs, scoring Cody McInnis (Bangor, ME), Pat Thibodeau and Dylan Foster (Oakland, ME).

Thibodeau had 2 RBI going 2-4 on the day, scoring 2 runs. McInnis added the other RBI. McClain had the only stolen base of game 2.

Dennis O'Neil (Mount Desert, ME) earned the win on the mound for the Eagles pitching 5 strong innings in which he faced 26 batters and gave up 7 hits.

With these wins the Eagles improve to 16-16 on the season, and 11-5 in North Atlantic Conference Play. They will play Lyndon State Sunday April 21st for another doubleheader.
