Heaps, Brett Steer Eagles Past Mariners

Box Score

Bangor, ME – Senior Mitch Heaps  (York, PA) scored 4 goals and sophomore Dustin Brett (Loudon, NH) scored 3 goals with 1 assist to lead the Eagles past NAC rival Maine Maritime Academy, 13-6 Wednesday night at Boucher Field.

The Eagles jumped on the board early when Vinny Visconti (North Andover, MA) found the back of the net on an Alex Ryan (Northfield, NH) pass to make it 1-0.

Mariners' A.J Larrabee connected with Alex Hermes to tie it at 1-1 with a little over 10 minutes remaining in the 1st quarter.

Husson scored the next 3 goals with Heaps, Ryan, and Brett all scoring to make it 4-1. MMA would score 2 before the end of the quarter on Hermes and Tim Grant shots, entering the 2nd period 4-3 Eagles.

The Eagles would never give up the lead they worked hard to extend, Nolan Brown (Waterford, CT) and Brandon Corbo (Merrimack, NH) exchanged goals and assists on two more scores, making it 6-3. Senior Dillon Shaw (Augusta, ME) set up Heaps to make it 7-3.

Nick Betti would score two consecutive goals for the Mariners closing the Husson lead to 7-5. Brett and Chris DelGiudice (Oakland, ME) added a pair of goals taking a 10-5 lead into the 4th quarter.

Hermes scored on a man-up opportunity as a final hope for MMA, however in the final 10 minutes of the game the Eagles scored 3 more times to squash any comeback dreams. Shaw, Brett, and Heaps all scored to seal the deal, 13-6.

Husson goalkeeper John Hooper III (Wakefield, RI) was sharp in net, making 10 saves to earn the win. James Wilgus made 14 saves in the loss for MMA.

The Eagles played a well disciplined game, only committing 4 penalties and allowing fewer turnovers than the Mariners.

"I'm very proud of a great team effort tonight that translated to the win. We controlled the ball on offense, played good defense, and responded well to several momentum swings," said Head Coach Sean Murphy, "We have a big challenge ahead of us this weekend and hope to build off this momentum."

Husson who is now 5-7 overall on the season and 5-2 in the North Atlantic Conference will end the regular season on the road in the next week. First facing NAC ranked #2 New England College on Saturday, April 20th at 1:00 PM and Thomas College next Wednesday, April 24th at 7:00 PM.
