Box Score The Husson Eagles were just three outs away from pulling off a dramatic come-from-behind victory against the Bowdoin Polar Bears on Tuesday night.
But the Eagles' upset bid was thwarted as Bowdoin staged a comeback of their own, scoring three runs in the top of the ninth and holding on in the bottom half to steal a 6-5 win.
Bowdoin second baseman Erik Jacobsen laced a triple to left-center field to lead off the final inning for the Polar Bears, and when pinch-runner Kyle LeBlanc crossed home plate on a passed ball by Husson's Jordan Carter the game was tied up at four runs a piece.
Bowdoin would tack on two more runs in the inning after Luke Regan reached on a two-out error that brought in Tim McGarry, and Sam Canales drove in Aaron Rosen with an RBI single to take a 6-4 lead.
Husson would score a run in the bottom of the ninth to get within one, and even got the would-be tying run to third base, but Bowdoin's David Zabinsky worked a strikeout and a groundout to end the Eagles' rally and finish the save.
Rosen was the main catalyst for the Polar Bears' offense, going 3-for-4 at the plate with 2 RBI and a run scored. He also stole a base and walked once.
Freshman left-hander Harry Ridge was impressive for Bowdoin in the start, going 6.2 innings while giving up four runs on just five hits and striking out seven.
Husson was led offensively by Shawn Smith who delivered a two-out, bases loaded double in the Eagles' four-run seventh. JT Whitten also added a pair of hits for the Eagles, while Dylan Foster and Pat Thibodeau each drove in a run.
The Eagles received a solid start from Tim Nason, who went six innings and gave up just three runs (two earned) on five hits. Nason did struggle with his pitch location at times, issuing five walks while also hitting a batter and striking out one.
Bowdoin earned their eighth straight victory to improve to 17-9 on the season (7-2 NESCAC). Husson falls to 13-15 (8-4 NAC).
Husson will next be on the diamond in a doubleheader at Thomas College on Thursday, April 18. First pitch is set for 2 PM.
