Eagles Split With Spartans in Conference Play

Bangor, Maine -- The Husson University baseball team split with Castleton State College on Sunday afternoon. The Spartans took the first game by a score of 7-4 while the Eagles held on for a 4-2 win int he second game.

Game 1 - Husson 4, Castleton 7

The first inning went scoreless before the Spartans jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the second. Macyn Clifford singled down the left field line. Clifford advanced to second on a ground out to the pitcher. The following two pitches proved to be crucial as Clifford advanced to third and then home on wild pitches for the first run of the game. Ryan Zielinski picked up two RBI on a single through the left side that scored Cameron Curler from third and Mat Pause from second.

Husson saw a pitching change in the top of the third as Joe Dvilinsky relieved Dennis O'Neil on the mound. Dvilinsky sat down the side; forcing a fly out, a pop out, and a ground out.

The Eagles pushed two across in the bottom of the frame. Andrew Curran led off the inning with a single up the middle. Cody McInnis followed that at bat with a single of his own down the right field line and with Curran off on the pitch, he was able to reach third safely. With runners on the corners, Dylan Foster brought Curran across the dish and advanced McInnis to second with a ground ball to the shortstop, Foster was out on the play. Shawn Smith notched an RBI with a roped single up the middle that brought McInnis around from second.

The next two innings went scoreless before Castleton added four more in the top of the sixth. Cameron Curler singled through the left side scoring Macyn Clifford. Tyler Lord singled through the left side which scored Allen White. With the bases loaded, Ryan Zielinsky hit a slow roller to the third baseman, Curler was out at the plate. A throw to first by the catcher sailed over J.T Whitten's head which allowed Matt Pause to score from third, Tyler Lord to score from second, and Zielinsky was safe at third.

Dylan Foster singled up the middle in the bottom of the sixth. The speedy foster would be successful in his steal attempts of second and third. With Foster standing on third, J.T. Whitten picked up an RBI with a deep single to the short stop.

Andrew Curran singled down the left field line to start the inning. Cody McInnis would follow his lead as he hit a single in the same exact spot as Curran did in his previous at bat. Pat Thibodeau would reach first on a fielder's choice, McInnis was out at second and Curran reached third safely. Dylan Foster would also reach on a fielder's choice on an almost identical ground ball as Thibodeau's, Thibodeau would be called out at second and Curran came across the plate. 

The Eagles tried to rally back in the bottom of the seventh as they picked up one run on three hits and left two men on base. 

The Eagles had five different pitchers on the mound in game one. Dennis O'Neil went 2.0 innings, allowing three runs and three hits while also walking three batters. Joe Dvilinsky came in for 3.0 innings, allowing one earned run on four hits with one strike out and two walked batters. Casey Estes faced three batters, earning two strikeouts. Jeremy Beers faced two batters while Seth Freudenberger faced three batters, earning two strikeouts.

Game 2 - Husson 4, Castleton 2

The Spartans took the 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a Joe Borowski RBI after a ground ball to the second baseman that scored Ryan Zielinsky from third.

The Eagles responded with four runs in the bottom of the second inning. Kyle Bishop started off the inning with a single to shortstop. Brandon Gendreau reached first after he was hit by the pitch which allowed Bishop to move over to second. Ben McLain followed with a single down the right field line to load the bases. With one out, Cody McInnis singled up the middle which scored Gendreau from third. With the bases still loaded, Pat Thibodeau came up with a bases clearing triple to left center field, scoring McInnis, Nick Moore, and McLain.

Both teams went through four scoreless innings before the Spartans added a run in the top of seventh inning. Dan Errico drove in Joe Borowski from third with a ground ball out, Errico out at first base.

Dan Whitney got the start for the Eagles on the mound. Whitney went 7.0 innings with a total of 80 pitches thrown, allowing one earned run on five hits with three strikeouts. Whitney sees his record improve to 2-0 on the season.

The Eagles return to action on Tuesday, April 16th as they take on Bowdoin College for a single 9 inning game at 7:00 PM.
