Box Score Bangor, ME - Husson men's lacrosse fell to North Atlantic Conference opponent Castleton State College Saturday afternoon, 15-3 at Boucher Field.
The two top ranked NAC teams battled in what turned out to be an extremely physical game.
The Spartans scored 2 goals within the first 10 minutes, making their statement early. Mitch Heaps (York, PA) struck first for the Eagles when a pass from Dillon Shaw (Augusta, ME) found Heaps for the score.
All eleven of the next goals were scored by the Spartans who created a hefty deficit for Husson.
Shaw took the ball all the way on to the net to make it 13-2 Castleton, but with less than 10 seconds remaining in the half Taylor Swarter found the back of the net for the Spartans once again.
Defensively the Eagles played much better the 2nd half of the game only allowing 1 goal in the final 30 minutes. That goal came from Alex Denny with 8:10 remaining in the 3rd.
Shaw connected with Heaps once again, to set the final score at 15-3. Husson offensively was the strongest in the 4th quarter with 15 shots, and 6 man up opportunities.
"Castleton is a very good team and it's hard to get any momentum, against a strong opponent, with a lot of mistakes. We didn't rise to the challenge today but we've made a lot of progress this year and this is a great motivator as everyone realizes how much further we have to go to compete with the top team in the NAC," Said Head Coach Sean Murphy, "We have a short turn around for another conference game tomorrow but it's a great chance to take the next step."
For the Eagles, John Hooper III (Wakefield, RI) had 19 saves in a little less than 52 minutes in net. Eric Lund (Mansfield, MA) played a little over 8 minutes, making 1 save.
Tomorrow the 4-7 (3-1) Eagles will host the Eagles of Green Mountain College for a 11:00AM game time. Prior to the start of the game a brief ceremony will take place to honor this year's seniors.
