Box Score 2 Bangor, ME - Husson baseball dropped two North Atlantic Conference games to Castleton State on Saturday afternoon and evening. With the loss, the Eagles (12-13) stand at 7-3 in the NAC. The Spartans (14-6) sit in first place in the conference with a 11-1 record.
Game 1: Husson 2, Castleton 6
The Eagles started out strong, scoring runs in the first and second innings. In the first inning, J.T. Whitten (Waterville, ME) was hit by a pitch, which advanced the runners on the loaded bases and sent Brandon Gendreau (Brewer, ME) across home. Cody McInnis (Old Town, ME) scored in the bottom of the second off a Dylan Foster (Oakland, ME) double.
Castleton responded with two runs in the top of the third with a run by Mat Pause (Hartford, VT) and another by Tyler Lord (South Burlington, VT). The game remained tied until the top of the eighth when the Spartans saw runs from Ryan Zielinski (Schenectady, NY), Joe Borowski (Schenectady, NY), Connor Hoagland (Granville, NY), and Brian Martin (Woodstock, VT), bringing the score to 6-2.
Spartans pitcher Conner Johnson (Castleton, VT) pitched seven innings for the win, while Matt Ravey (Colchester, VT) closed out the game pitching one inning. Kyle McLain (Orrington, ME) was credited with the loss, and Pat McEwen (Brewer, ME) and Zachary Yates (Newport, RI) also made appearances on the mound for Husson.
Game 2: Husson 3, Castleton 5
The second game of the day went to 11 innings before the Spartans emerged with the win. Castleton started off the scoring in the top of the second when Nate Swahn (Rutland, VT) singled to send Macyn Clifford (Brookline, NH) home.
The Spartans struck again in the top of the fifth with a run from Chaz Millett (Enfield, CT). Husson got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth when Foster, Pat Thibodeau (Caribou, ME), and Gendreau each scored a run, bringing it to 3-2 in favor of the Eagles.
Castleton quickly tied it up with a run from Hoagl in the top of the sixth, and the game remained deadlocked straight into extra innings. Husson had a chance to take it in the bottom of the ninth with runners on first and third with two outs, but Thibodeau flied out. Castleton had a chance of their own in the top of the eleventh inning, and they capitalized on it with runs from Martin and Swahn to secure the win.
Derek Osborne (Castleton, VT) earned the win for the Spartans, pitching nine innings and giving up no earned runs. Ravey pitched two innings for Castleton and gave up one hit. Brandon Reilly (Pemaquid, ME) and Shawn Smith (Winterport, ME) pitched for Husson, with Reilly picking up the loss.
Husson and Castleton will play again on Sunday in a doubleheader starting at 12 PM.
