Monks Clip Eagles In Three Sets

Box Score

Bangor, ME -  As Husson Volleyball comes into the homestretch of their regular season schedule, there is mostly only North Atlantic Conference matches remaining to be played.

Wednesday brought about one of just three out-of-conference matches left, as the Eagles looked to avenge an earlier loss to the in-state rival St. Joseph's College Monks from Standish.

The Monks, who play out of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference, would prove to yet again be too tall of a task for the Eagles as they wound up sweeping the contest in three sets (25-12, 25-12, 25-16).

Game one started out being tightly contested, as St. Joe's eked their way to an 11-9 advantage.  The Monks would then go on a decisive eight-point run behind the strong serving of Shadai Gosselin, and wind up taking a 1-0 lead in the match.

Husson came out quickly in the second game, taking an early 5-2 lead.  Gosselin would then rotate into the service position for St. Joe's, and subsequently go on an 11-point run to completely take control of the momentum and help stake them to a 2-0 lead in the match.

Husson would not go away quietly however, as they fought their way to a 10-7 advantage in game three.  Following another six-point St. Joe's run, Husson was able to string together a few of their own that kept it close at 13-12.  From there, the Monks were able to use middle-hitter Felicia Wachowiak effectively to re-gain control and finish out the victory.

"I thought we played strong defense and played well as a cohesive unit," Husson coach Jodie Fairbank said after the match.  "Our coverage was much better, which is good because that's what we've been working on...But St. Joe's is a very tough team."

"We have USM (University of Southern Maine) tomorrow night, then a little break this weekend, and then we jump right back into conference play with Maine Maritime next Tuesday night, so we'll have to get it together by then," Fairbank added.

Wachowiak led the Monks' offense with 14 powerful kills on 24 attacks.  Victoria Huntley added seven kills and nine digs for the winners, while setter Mariah Hebert tallied 25 assists, seven digs, and three kills.

The Eagles were led by Autumn Wilber (Tuftonboro, NH) with five kills and eight digs, while Lindsey Chapman (Gorham, ME) added four kills and a match-high 17 digs to go along with three total blocks.

The win improves St. Joe's to an impressive 15-4 (5-1 GNAC) on the season, while Husson slips to 8-14 (0-1 NAC).

Husson will travel to USM for an out-of-conference match tomorrow night at 7 p.m.  The Eagles' next home match will be next Tuesday, October 15, against NAC rival Maine Maritime, also at 7 p.m.
