Box Score Waterville, ME - The Husson University field hockey team downed Thomas College Saturday afternoon by a final of 3-2. The Eagles outscored the Terriers 2-1 in the second half to earn the NAC win. Husson used a Thomas own goal, and goals by Sabrina Vaillancourt and Kayla Grindle to secure the victory. Brittany Premo had a pair of successful strokes for Thomas in the loss.
The Eagles reeled off 9 shots in the first 15 minutes along with attempting four penalty corners in the same span. Opening shots for Husson came from Vaillancourt (4), Mariah Arno (2), Liz Noddin (2) and Logan Wilson.
The Terriers lit up the scoreboard first, as Brittany Premo score the first of her two goals on the day almost 25 and a half minutes into the contest. Premo maneuvered down the left side and tucked away a left handed shot on the back side of her stick.
With 7:53 left in the first, Thomas' Brooklyn Curry had a chance at cage, but missed wide ride.
The Eagles retaliated several minutes later as Arno shot on cage with just over a minute left, resulting in a Husson penalty corner. Vaillancourt took the corner for Husson and just moments later, with only a fraction of a second left, Arno scored for Husson to even the score heading into halftime.
Both teams traded shots for the opening minutes of the second half, and in the 43rd minute Husson scored the go-ahead goal by way of Sabrina Vaillaincourt. Mariah Arno did well to attack from the left to the right side of the cage and then dished to Vaillancourt for the score. Husson lead 2-1.
Just over five minutes later, Husson added the game-winning goal. Vaillancourt passed in off of a penalty corner to Melissa Souza who relayed to Kayla Grindle near the net for the third Husson goal of the afternoon.
The Terriers wouldn't go quietly, however, cutting the Eagle lead to 3-2 with under 19 minutes to go in the contest. Premo scored her second of the day at home on her own corner attempt, passing to Lauren Hachey who quickly rifled back at Premo, scoring past Husson goalie Maicee Gustin.
Gustin managed six solid saves on the eight total shots Thomas put on cage, while tending all 70 minutes in net for the Eagles. Thomas' Jasmine Bishop made an impressive 14 saves on 17 shots on goal, picking up a tough loss at home.
"We had a slow start," said head coach Jen Johnstone. "We really stepped up to play 'our' game in the second half. Our fitness was a huge part this and it was great to have some of our younger players step up."
The Eagles will play once again tomorrow in Waterville, taking on NESCAC opponent Colby College on the other side of town. Game time is scheduled for 12:00 noon.
