Box Score Castleton, Vt. – Castleton State College starting pitcher Tyler Erickson (Naugatuck, Conn.) pitched a complete-game four-hitter and senior classmate Pete Wagner (Brattleboro, Vt.) drove in three runs to lead Castleton to a 10-0 win over Husson University in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) East Division Baseball Tournament elimination game Saturday morning at Spartan Field.
Erickson struck out seven and hit a batter in the shutout performance, improving to 8-2 on the season. Pat McEwen (Brewer, Maine) was saddled with the loss for Husson, allowing nine runs (eight earned) on 13 hits over eight-and-one-third innings, while striking out seven and walking three.
Wagner finished 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored, and Joe Borowski (Schenectady, N.Y.) went 4-for-5 with three runs scored to pace the Spartan offense. Nike Ververis (Plainsfield, Conn.) went 3-for-4 to lead Husson, while Kyle Vanidestine (Bangor, Maine) had the only other hit for the Eagles as Erickson ruled the day.
After being staked to a four-run lead in the first Erickson worked around a two-out hit batsmen in the bottom of the inning, then retired 12 of the next 14 batters he faced, allowing a pair of hits to Ververis.
Castleton plated four runs in the first inning, as seven Spartans came to the plate. After David Brandt (Contoocook, N.H.) was hit by a pitch, stole second and came around to score on an error, Borowski started a string of three-straight hits with a single to left-centerfield. Zak Mayo (Avon, Conn.) followed with a line-drive single to centerfield and Wagner laced a double down the leftfield line to score Borowski. Both runners moved up on a passed ball and Cameron Curler (Vergennes, Vt.) brought home the final run of the inning with a ground-out to shortstop.
Wagner drove in his second run of the game with a line drive single to centerfield in the third, plating Borowski who reached on a base hit and moved to second when Mayo drew a walk. The Spartans loaded the bases with two outs in the inning, but McEwen settled in to record a strikeout and avoid further damage.
McEwen was able to work around base runners in the middle third of the contest, before retiring six-straight in the seventh and eighth. In the ninth, the Spartans chased him with one out in the ninth as Wagner and Curler each provided RBI-singles. Castleton tacked on three more after McEwen's day was over as Macyn Clifford (Brookline, N.H.) stroked an RBI-single and two more runs scored on an error and fielder's choice.
Castleton (27-14) advances to play the loser of game four between Thomas and Colby-Sawyer. Husson's season ends at 19-18.
