Husson Drops NAC Tournament Opener to Thomas

Box Score

Castleton, Vt. – Thomas put four runs on the board in the second inning on the way to a 6-0 victory over Husson on Friday afternoon in each teams' first game of the North Eastern Athletic Conference East Division Tournament hosted by Castleton at Spartan Field.

The Terriers got a complete-game from starter Chris Farrer (Sidney, Maine), who scattered seven hits  over nine innings while striking out seven without walking a batter. Cody Vigue (Skowhegan, Maine) paced the offense with a 3-for-4 day and three runs scored. Thomas improves to 25-15 with the victory while the Eagles fall to 19-17 overall.

Thomas broke out for four runs in the bottom of the second against starter Nate Adams (Frankfort, Maine). Rob Nutter (Kennebunk, Maine) led off the frame with a walk and Vigue and Thomas Cameron (Jackson, Maine) followed with singles to load the bases for Taylor Livingston (No. Andover, Mass.). Lvingston hit a ball to the second baseman, but the ball went through his legs, allowing two runners to score. After a sacrifice bunt, a single and a sacrifice fly scored two more runners came home for the four-run advantage.

Husson threatened in the fifth as each of the first two batters singled, however, Jason Smith (Milford, Maine) was thrown out while rounding second two casually and couldn't beat the tag back to the bag. Cody McInnis (Bangor, Maine) singled and then  Kyle Vanidestine (Bangor, Maine) singled to short, loading the bases for Brandon Gendreau (Brewer, Maine). However, Gendreau went down on strikes to end the frame.

An inning later, Shawn Smith (Winterport, Maine) laced a two-out triple to right-center, however, he was stranded on third as the next batter grounded out to end the inning. Thomas responded in the bottom of the frame as Vigue hit a leadoff double and came around to score on a single by Livingston to make it 5-0.

The Terriers tacked on a run in the bottom for the eighth as Vigue singled, advanced to second on a wild pitch and made it home on another single by Livingston.

Shawn Smith finished 2-for-4 on the afternoon and was one of six Eagles to get a hit. Adams took the complete-game loss, allowing ten hits, five earned runs and walking three while striking out two.

With the loss, Husson will now play Castleton at 9 a.m. on Saturday morning, with the winner advancing and the loser being eliminated from the tournament. Thomas will follow at noon when they take on Colby-Sawyer, who beat the Spartans 7-2. The loser of that game will play the winner of the day's first contest at 3 p.m.
