Box Score 2 Bangor, ME – The Husson University baseball team swept the first of two double headers this weekend against the Hornets of Lyndon State College, 12-0 and 8-2 in North East Atlantic Conference (NEAC) action Saturday from the Harold Alfond Diamond at the John W. Winkin Sports Complex in Bangor, Maine. With the wins, the Eagles improve 17-16 (13-8 NEAC) while the Hornets fall to a 5-25 (3-19 NEAC) record.
In game one, Husson ace Nate Adams tossed a complete game one-hit shutout allowing just three runners to reach base while striking out three. Adams improves to 5-4 on the mound. Offensively the Eagles picked up 16 hits while getting off to a fantastic start with eight hits and seven runs coming in the bottom of the first inning. Niko Ververis went 2-3 from the plate driving in three runs and scoring one. Nick Lancisi had a productive day going 2-4 from the dish driving in two runs and scoring a pair. Brandon Gendreau also scored three times after going 3-4 with a double and a stolen base.
Devin Rhodes was credited with the loss in the first game, throwing four and a third after being lifted. Rhodes allowed 14 hits, 11 runs (10 of which were earned), and struck out two with one walk. Cody Gage would have the only hit in the game for the Hornets with Isaac Earle and Dylan Newton both hit by pitches to reach base.
In that productive first for the Eagles, Kyle Vanidestine would start things off reaching and scoring on a two-part error. Jake Arthers singled up the middle which scored Gendreau from second. Ververis doubled down the right field line scoring Lancisi and Arthers and moving Shawn Smith to third. Kyle Bishop singled through the right side that would give the Eagles a bases loaded situation while scoring Shawn Smith. With the bases juiced, Cody McInnis roped a ball to the shortstop that would score Ververis. Vanidestine hit a sac-fly to left field to pick up the final RBI of the inning.
The Eagles would pick up one more run off the bat of S. Smith in the fourth. Four more runs came in for Husson in the fifth off a one run double by Vanidestine, a Lancisi double that would bring two runs across, and a Ververis single that drove in one.
The second game brought freshmen Evan Eldridge to the mound for a spectacular 6 inning performance before the knuckleballer Tim Nason was brought in to wrap things up. Eldridge improves to 1-1 with the win, allowing just five hits and two earned runs while striking out four batters and walking five. Dylan Foster led the Eagles at the plate in game two, going 2-3 with a double and a triple knocking in three RBI and scoring one himself. McInnis added two RBI after going 1-3 and added a stolen base to his stat line. Gendreau and Benjamin McClain also chipped in 2 stolen bases each.
Isaac Earle took the mound for the Hornets in the second game going just four innings before being shown an early exit. Earle allowed six hits, struck out five, and walked two in his sixth loss of the season, dropping his overall record to 0-6. Sam Matthews led all Lyndon State batters going a perfect 3-3 from the plate with a big two-out triple in the top of the sixth. Cody Gage went just 1-3 from the dish but managed to bring in the lone RBI.
The game went scoreless until the bottom of the second when McInnis reached on an error that would also score S. Smith. After McInnis stole second, Foster would belt a triple to right center that scored both McClain and McInnis. Vanidestine came through with his second sac-fly of the day, this time to center scoring the speedy Foster. Arthers reached base on a throwing error which would in turn, score Gendreau who had reached base on a free pass.
Lyndon scored their first run of the series in the fourth, when Trucott came in to score on a head's up play after a passed ball to make the score 6-1.
The Eagles would strike again in the bottom of the fifth, picking up two runs. McInnis grounded out to second base but that was enough to score S. Smith from third. Foster drove in McClain later in the inning after doubling to right center.
The Hornets notched the second run of the day on a single to shortstop off the bat of Gage and that allowed Matthews to score in the top of the sixth.
The Husson University Eagles and Lyndon State College Hornets will square off for another double header Sunday. The game time has been moved to 10:00 am and 12:00 pm in order to avoid any rain delays. As the double header will be the final regular season home contest of 2012, Husson will honor their five seniors prior to the first pitch.
