Box Score Leesburg, FL - The Husson University baseball team picked up their first win of the 2012 season, 10-6 in game one of a double header agaist the Eagles of Bridgewater College (VA) Tuesday morning in Leesburg as part of the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational.
Husson was led by catcher Nick Lancisi (Dover, ME) who found his offensive prowess in the game going 2-3 with four RBI on a pair of doubles. Lancisi was helped out by good hitting in front of him as the 1-3 hitters all had at least two hits. Shawn Smith (Winterport, ME) was 3-4 with an RBI and a pair of runs scored, while Dylan Foster (Oakland, ME) and Brandon Gendreau (Brewer, ME) each had two runs scored and an RBI as foster was 2-5 and Gendreau went 2-3.
For Bridgewater, first baseman Andrew Hacker (Mechanicsville, VA) went 3-4 at the plate with an RBI, Derrik Walling (Saylorsburg, PA) was 1-2 while knocking in a pair and Jay Thompson (Waynesboro, VA) scored twice going 1-3 with a walk.
Husson got things started in the top of the first when Gendreau mounted a one-out double to right center, and moved to third on a passed ball. That set the table for Smith, and he came through in a big way, tripling to right center to pick up the RBI and put Husson on the board 1-0. Lancisi jumped on the first pitch and doubled to center to bring in Smith and right away it was 2-0 in favor of Husson.
After the Bridgewater Eagles went 1-2-3 in the bottom of the first, it was time for more Husson offense in the second. As the order flipped around with two outs in the inning, Foster singled to right to start a rally, and after Gendreau was hit by a pitch and Smith legged out an infield single, Lancisi stepped up to the plate and blasted a 3 RBI double to break things open 5-0 in favor of Husson.
Bridgewater stayed alive, battling for a run in the bottom of the second. Thompson reached on a fielder's choice, and was moved to second on another FC, sitting 180 feet away with two outs. Wailing stepped up and singled through the right side, plating Thompson to get Bridgewater on the board 5-1. They would add another in the bottom of the third, letting Husson know they weren't going away. Darren Yoder (Lancaster, PA) drew a walk to lead off the inning, and advanced to second as Husson picked up two outs on the next two batters. Bridgewater showed they were tough with two as Bryan Sanderson (Lynchburg, VA) picked up an RBI single up the middle and it was 5-2 Husson after three.
The Husson offense woke up again in the 6th, and added some insurance in the top of the frame. Niko Ververis (Plainsfield, CT) started off the inning reaching on an error, and advanced to second. He was pinch-ran for by Josh Tardiff (Hampden, ME), who advanced to third after Benjamin McLain (Pemaquid, ME) reached on a fielder's choice, leaving runners at the corners with no outs. Cody McInnis (Bangor, ME) grounded out to first which plated Tardiff and moved McLain to second. Foster stepped up and doubled to left, picking up the RBI as McLain scored from second. Gendreau - who's been swinging a hot bat so far this season - kept the rally going with a single up the middle, knocking in Foster to give Husson and 8-2 advantage.
Bridgewater once again wouldn't quit, adding a run in the bottom of the inning. Jonathan Mason (Sterling, VA) was hit by a pitch to lead things off, and after a pair of singles from Thompson and Hacker, the bases were loaded for Bridgewater. Walling hit a fly ball to center that knocked in Mason, but wasn't deep enough to move the other runners, so there were men at first and second with one away. Husson received a pair of fly balls with no damage, and were fortunate to get out of the inning with the lead at 8-3.
In the top of the 7th, Husson added two more for insurance. Kyle Vanidestine (Bangor, ME) started the rally with one out when he doubled down the left field line. After Tardiff came up to the plate for the first time and walked, McLain doubled down the right field line and both runners came around to score giving Husson a 10-3 advantage going into the bottom of the 7th.
Bridewater came up to bat in the bottom of the last inning with a steep hill to climb, and made a valliant effort in the end. Alex Nuttycombe (Newport News, VA) stepped in with one down and doubled down the left field line, and was moved to third on a Sanderson single through the right side. Mason grounded out to first as the Husson Eagles exchanged a Nuttycombe run for an out late in the game as there were now two away with the score at 10-4. Thompson walked to set up Hacker who singled up the middle, scoring Sanderson, making the score 10-5. After a Husson pitching change, Walling walked to load the bases, and a pinch-hit walk by Cam Stevenson (Virginia Beach, VA) plated Thompson. Finally Husson was able to deal a groundout and secure the win 10-6.
The two teams took a short break and squared off for another seven scheduled innings in game two.
