Husson Drops Second, Earns Split with Bridgewater

Box Score

Leesburg, FL - The Husson University baseball team was unable to complete the sweep against the Eagles of Bridewater College (VA), dropping the second of their double header 3-1 Tuesday afternoon in the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational.

Husson's lone run of the day came off the bat of senior catcher Kevin Rennick (Lincoln, RI) who was 1-1 with an RBI in the game. Kyle Vanidestine (Bangor, ME) scored the run while going 1-3 at the plate. Leadoff hitter Dylan Foster (Oakland, ME) was the lone Husson Eagle with a multi-hit performance, going 2-4 in the second game. Lefty Mark Dvilinsky (Westbrook, ME) went the distance, allowing three runs (2 earned) off six hits and three walks while striking out two.

For Bridgewater, Andrew Hacker (Mechanicsville, VA) had another good game on the day going 2-3 at the plate with an RBI. Catcher Ryan Smith (Wattenton, VA) knocked in the other two runs, going 1-2 in the game. Jay Thompson (Waynesboro, VA) came around to score twice on a 1-3 performance at the plate, while pitcher Dillon Via (Crozet, VA) pitched all seven innings, scattering nine hits without walking a batter and striking out 5 to earn the win.

Bridgewater started the scoring in the top of the second when Thompson reached on an error, and moved to third on Hacker's double to right center. A walk would load the bases, and another to Smith plated Thompson to put BC on the board with a 1-0 lead.

The Bridgewater Eagles would score again their next time up, as Thompson started the rally once again, this time doubling to left center with two outs. Hacker singled up the middle to bring him home, and that marked a 2-0 lead for BC.

Husson was still unable to get things going offensively, and in the top of the fourth, Bridgewater would add another run - their third in as many innings. Jonathan Mason (Sterling, VA) doubled down the left field line to lead off the inning, and right away, Smith knocked him in with a singe to center.

Facing a 3-0 deficit in the bottom of the fourth, Vanidestine earned a one out single through the right side. Jake Arthers (Belfast, ME) reached on an error, moving Vanidestine to third. Rennick flew out to right but it was deep enough to score the speedy Vanidestine and Husson was on the board, down 3-1.

That would do it for the scoring, as both pitchers settled in the rest of the way. Husson had a couple opportunities to even the score, first in the fifth when Foster made it to within 90 feet, but was unable to score. The Husson Eagles' best chance to tie or even pull out a win was in the bottom of the seventh when they had the bases loaded with one out and the heart of the order up, but nothing would come of it and the score remained 3-1 in favor of Bridgewater.

After splitting the day's double header with Bridgewater, Husson (1-3) takes on St. John Fisher at 1:00 pm in their only game on Wednesday. Bridgewater (11-4) will complete their RussMatt Central Florida Invitational schedule on Wednesday when they take on Aurora at 11:00 am.
