Box Score Castine, ME – Amanda Gifford (Lee, ME) tallied a hat trick that included the game-winner as Husson handed Maine Maritime a 6-1, North Atlantic Conference (NAC) loss at Ritchie Field on Sunday. The Eagles (2-7, 1-1 NAC) fell behind early, but scored six unanswered on the Mariners (0-7, 0-2 NAC).
Gifford gave the Eagles the go-ahead goal at 30:31. Marcella Francouer (Danville, NH) served a ball into a box that was whiffed on by a Mariner defender before landing at the feet of Gifford right on Taylor O'Malley's (Cranston, RI) doorstep. The Mariners' keeper had no chance for a save on that one, but she did come up with six stops in her 45 minutes of work.
Gifford's goal gave Husson its first lead of the day. Annie Koensgen (Placitas, NM) booted a direct kick into the upper right corner from 30-yards out to give Maine Maritime a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute. It held up for less than ten minutes before Alexandra Laniewski (Scarborough, ME) scored the equalizer on a 20-yard shot into the upper right corner. Once Gifford got the Eagles out in front, there was no looking back.
Less than three minutes after setting up Gifford, Francouer cashed in on a set piece, then Becca Jones (Newmarket, NH) scored on an unsettled situation after O'Malley had denied an initial shot. Gifford scored both of the Eagles' second-half goals, heading home crosses from Emily Zurcher (Topsham, ME) and Katie McLaughlin (Winslow, ME).
Husson takes the field again on Wednesday, when they travel to Bates for a 3:00 pm start. Maine Maritime returns to action next Saturday against Lyndon State.
