Eagles Split With Hornets in First Double Header of the Weekend

Bangor, ME – Husson University split its double header with the Hornets of Lyndon State this afternoon in a sunny day at the Winkin Sports Complex. The Eagles won game one 3-1 over Lyndon state on the back of a strong outing from starter Ryan Arsenault (Portland ME). Arsenault went the distance, pitching around 3 hits and allowing just one run while striking out 8. Husson dropped game two 7-6, falling behind early, but rallied back to within one but couldn't surpass the 7 runs Lyndon State put up in the first two innings.

In game one the Eagles got plenty of offense out of the leadoff spot as Cody McInnis (Bangor, ME) went 3-4 and scored a run to set things up for the rest of the lineup. Ethan Guerette (Sabattus, ME) and Shawn Smith (Winterport, ME) each had an RBI, and Kyle Vanidestine (Bangor, ME) got two hits in his 3 ab's in game one.

Husson started the scoring in the top of the first when clean-up hitter singled to right to score McInnis from third. The Hornets answered in the home half of the inning when Robert Trucott (Lyndonville, VT) hit a sac-fly to center that scored Korey Marsh (Essex, VT). Arsenault and Lyndon starter Isaac Earle (Vernon, VT) mowed down batters in the middle innings before the Eagles finally got back on the board in the 5th when Guerette hit a solo shot to put Husson on top by a run. Husson added some insurance in the top of the 6th when Chris Maguire (Orland, ME) scored on a balk.

In game two the Eagles fell behind early, but battled back thanks in large part to a 3-4 day at the plate from third baseman Jake Arthers (Belfast, ME) who knocked in a run and scored 2. Guerette had another good game at the plate going 2-3 scoring a run to push his team-leading total to 30 and also knocking in another. Kyle Savage pitched well out of the bullpen, going 4 and two thirds scoreless striking out 8, and his work was the catalyst for the late Eagle rally.

Husson picked up where they left off in game one, scoring in the top of the first, Maguire hit a sac-fly to right scoring Arthers to go up 1-0 on the Hornets. Lyndon responded for 5 runs in the home half, jumping out early with 5 hits in the inning. They'd score again in the second when Jake Ainsworth (Fairfax, VT) doubled to score Marsh, who singled to lead off the inning.  Savage came in to stop the bleeding, and shut out the Hornet offense for the rest of the game. Head Coach Jason Harvey was eager to mention the first year pitcher's work after the game, "It was good to see him come out and pitch so well, I was glad to see him come in and throw like that today." The Eagle offense mounted a comeback in the 5th, Guerette singled to right center plating Dylan Foster (Oakland, ME) who singled to lead off the rally. Smith doubled down the line in right to score Arthers, and Maguire hit a sac-fly for his second RBI of the game. Smith scored when Vanidestine reached on an error, but that was all the runs in the inning, and Husson ended the inning down two. The Eagles rallied again in the 6th; Arthers singled to left to score Tom Crews (Bangor, ME) who doubled to start of the inning, the second time in a row Husson got lead-off hits to start an inning. Husson left two on to end the scoring and that was all the Eagle bats had in them and Lyndon State would win 7-6.

Coach Harvey was impressed with his team's resiliency, and had this to say of the effort, "Our team went through some adversity today, and they responded." His Eagles return to action tomorrow, when they get the Hornets again for a Sunday double header, first pitch scheduled for noon.
