Eagles Sweep Terriers

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Bangor, ME – The Husson University Baseball team took two from the Terriers of Thomas College in an afternoon double header at the Winkin Sports Complex. The Eagles won game one on the back of starter Dan Beatham (Dexter, ME) who went the distance to earn the 7-0 victory. The second game was much closer as the Eagles held on to edge out Thomas 5-4. Shawn Smith (Winterport, ME) led Husson offensively, going 3-4 with a pair of RBI in the night cap.

Husson took the first one 7-0 thanks to a solid complete game shut out from Beatham. The senior scattered 4 hits in his 7 innings and struck out a pair. Leadoff hitter Cody McInnis (Bangor, ME) scored two runs despite an 0-3 day at the plate. Shawn Smith added to his RBI total going 1-1 with a pair of walks, knocking in a run and scoring another. Jake Arthers (Belfast, ME), Ethan Guerette (Sabattus, ME) and Kevin Rennick (Lincoln, RI) recorded two hit apiece as the Eagles squared up Thomas's starter Brandon Rolfe (Falmouth, ME) early. Five other Eagles picked up RBI in game one, and 7 of the 9 starters got base hits.

Husson opened up the scoring with 5 runs in the first, sending 10 batters to the plate. With a 5-0 edge in the 4th, Kyle Vanidestine hit a ground-rule double down the left field line that scored Smith, stretching their lead to 6.  The Eagles scored again in the 5th to close out the scoring when Arthers doubled to right center to score McInnis who reached on an error earlier in the inning. Beatham continue to roll in the late innings, shutting down the Terriers to earn the W.

In game two, the Eagles threw Mark Dvilinsky (Westbrook, ME) who went 5 innings, giving up just one run on 5 hits, striking out 5. Smith went 3-4 at the plate, knocking in two RBI, making 3 on the day for the sophomore right fielder, who stretched his team-leading RBI count to 22. McInnis also knocked in a pair, and first year catcher Nick Ververis went 3-3 at the plate for Husson.

The Eagles picked up where they left off in game one, scoring in the first inning on Smith's RBI double that plated Guerette. Thomas would answer back in the third inning, picking up their first run of the day when Cody Vigue (Skowhegan, ME) doubled, allowing Daniel Ierardi (Dunstable, MA) to score from second. The Eagles scored two runs in the 5th to take back the lead when McInnis doubled down the line, and Ververis scored from second, and Tom Crews (Bangor, ME) came all the way around from first to give Husson a 3-1 advantage. Husson got two around again in the 5th, the first came off a Smith single that scored Guerette, and then later in the inning Kyle Vanidestine (Bangor, ME) hit a sac-fly to left that plated Chris Maguire (Orland, ME). Thomas came back in the top of the 6th, scoring three runs off the Husson bullpen. With a one run lead going into the last inning, the Eagles looked to closer Kyle Leeman (Bangor, ME), who struck out two to earn the save for Husson.

With the wins, Husson improves to 4-2 in conference play, pushing them into a tie with Thomas atop the conference. Head Coach Jason Harvey was happy with the way his team played in today's double header, "Today was a big step forward, it's always nice to pick up a couple of conference wins. After a three game skid, everything started to turn around today. We limited our strikeouts today, which was a good sign as we move forward in conference." The Eagles return to action tomorrow when they host a Saturday afternoon double header with the Hornets of Lyndon State College. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 pm tomorrow with the estimated start time for game two at 2:30 pm.
