Eagles Earn Senior Day Sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Bangor, ME – The Husson University baseball team earned the sweep of the Good Friday double header with the Beavers of the University of Maine Farmington at a packed Winkin Complex. The Eagles celebrated senior day, honoring the 8 seniors in a special pre-game ceremony featuring special guest John Winkin. Winkin was the head coach at Husson from 2004-07 and was on hand at the field that bears his name to honor the members of his final recruiting class for the Eagles.

Husson came through with the W for Coach Winkin in game one, topping UMF 8-1. The Eagle victory came thanks in large part to another solid start from junior right hander Nate Adams (Frankfort, ME) who went 6 innings, letting up the lone run on 3 hits and fanning 6, senior lefty Ryan Walker (Hollis, ME) came in to finish it off, striking out his first batter, walking the next, and rolling a double play to end the game. The Eagles completed the sweep, earning the victory 5-0 with another quality start by the Eagle rotation, this time on the left arm of sophomore Mark Dvilinsky (Westbrook, ME) who went 6 innings, allowing no runs on a pair of hits, two walks and striking out 5, senior Aaron Sullivan (Eastport, ME) came in to complete the shutout with a 1-2-3 7th.

The Eagle offense was off and running, getting 8 runs on as many hits. Husson was led by Kyle Vanidestine (Bangor, ME) who went 2-3 scoring a pair of runs and notching an RBI. Ethan Guerette (Sabbatus, ME) had a good first game of his senior day going 2-4 at the plate, scoring a run and knocking in another.

Husson started off the scoring in the bottom of the second, Shawn Smith (Winterport, ME) walked to start off the inning, then Chris Maguire (Orland, ME) took an inside pitch off his left shoulder to put two on for Vanidestine who doubled to drive in Smith from second. After a pop-out to short, catcher Kevin Rennick (Lincoln, RI) came in and hit a sac-fly that brought in Maguire who advanced to third on the Vanidestine double.

The Eagles tacked on another one in the fourth, Vanidestine came up with two out in the inning and singled to right. He stole second and advanced to third on a passed ball, which set the table for the designated hitter Josh Gaudette (Waterville, ME) who doubled to center for the RBI.

Husson scored 5 more runs in the bottom of the fifth to stretch their lead. Crews walked to start the inning and quickly swiped second. Crews advanced to third on a ground out, sending Jake Arthers (Belfast, ME) to the plate and he singled to right to score the run. Guerette came up and belted a triple to right for the RBI. Smith singled to left field to plate Guerette and that called for a pitching change for the Beavers. The Farmington bullpen couldn't stop the Eagle rally as the first baseman Maguire got the RBI with a base hit to right center. Vanidestine reached on a fielder's choice, and advanced to third on a walk and a wild pitch, and later scored on a Beaver error.

UMF did answer back in the top of the sixth, Russ Schmelzer (Winthrop, ME) scored on Beaver first baseman Josh Garneau's (South Portland, ME) single down the left field line. That's all that Farmington could muster on the day and the game ended in a Husson victory, 8-1.

The Eagle offense came through for just enough in the second contest as the first six batters each got one hit, led by Arthers who had two RBI and scored another run. The Husson pitching shut out the Beaver bats, as Dvilinsky allowed just two hits and Sullivan closed the door.

Husson got things going in the bottom of the third inning, Ververis walked to start things out, and senior Tom Crews (Bangor, ME) did the same, setting up Arthers who doubled down the line for a pair of RBI. Arthers advanced to third on a fly out and scored on a balk to tack on the third run.

The Eagles got a couple more in the bottom of the 5th, as Guerette was tough with two outs and singled and then advanced all the way to third on an error. Smith singled up the middle to score the run, and then stole second to set up Maguire who got the RBI on a single of his own to right. That's all they'd need in game two, and they got their second victory 5-0.

Head Coach Jason Harvey was quick to note his solid pitching in the sweep, "We had two real good starts out there by Mark Dvilinsky and Nate Adams, and it was nice to get Walker and Sully in there to end 'em. Things went pretty well out there at the plate too, we'd like to keep that going tomorrow as well." The Saturday double header has been moved to the Winkin Complex due to a precipitation-filled forecast. The Eagles and the Beavers go at it again tomorrow at 11:00 am.
