Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Bangor, ME – Husson University earned a split today in their double header with in-state rival Bowdoin College. The Eagles won the first game 8-2 thanks to a quality start and a complete game from right handed pitcher Nate Adams (Frankfort, ME). The Polar Bears fought back in game two and earned the victory 8-4. Bowdoin first baseman Dan Hicks (New York, NY) paced the offense going 1-3 with a walk, a run scored and 3 RBI in the night cap.

Husson won game one on the sturdy right arm of Nate Adams, who went the distance, scattering 6 hits, allowing just one earned run, walking two and striking out 5. Tom Crews (Bangor, ME) led Husson offensively, going 1-2 with two RBI and a run scored. Cody McInnis (Bangor, ME) also picked up a pair of RBI out of the leadoff position. Shawn Smith (Winterport, ME) and Kyle Vanidestine (Bangor, ME) each scored a pair to help the Eagles to 8 runs in the day game. Adam Marquit (New York, NY) led the Polar Bears at the plate, going 2-3 and scoring a run as the only Bowdoin batter to pick up multiple hits off Adams.

The Eagles got things going offensively in the bottom of the second. Smith led off the inning with a free pass, and quickly swiped second to get himself into scoring position. Chris Maguire (Orland, ME) grounded to short, but reached on an error by the shortstop that scored Smith. Husson tacked on another in the third on a Jake Arthers (Belfast, ME) sac fly that scored Nick Ververis (Plainsfield, VT) who walked to lead off the inning.

Bowdoin closed the back in the top of the 4th, after Adams got the first batter swinging, Brett Gorman (Bedford, NY) singled up the middle. Brendan Garner (Swampscott, MA) was the next batter, who doubled to score the run from first. Adams hit Dan Findley (Duxbury, MA) to put himself into a tough spot with runners at 1st and 2nd with just one out. He stepped up and rolled a double play to get Husson out of the inning.

Husson answered back in the bottom of the inning for four runs to break the game open. Maguire walked, and Vanidestine and Crews were hit by pitches in back to back at bats to load the bases for the Eagles. Ververis came through with a sac-fly to left, scoring Maguire from second. Josh Tardiff (Hampden, ME) singled to center, plating Vanidestine who came around from second. McInnis came up with runners on the corners, and singled to the gap in left center clearing the bases with 2 RBI and Husson stretched their lead to 6-1.

The Eagles kept things going in their next at bats as Smith eyed his second walk of the game. After Smith stole second and Vanidestine walked, Crews doubled to left picking up a pair of RBI to push the Eagle lead to 8-1. The Polar Bears battled back in the top of the 7th, with one out and runners at the corners, a passed ball scored Marquit who singled two batters earlier. Adams got a ground out to stop the rally and end the game, Husson earned the victory 8-2.

Husson starter Mark Dvilinsky (Westbrook, ME) pitched well despite being on the hook for the loss, going four innings, allowing 3 earned runs on 5 hits with a pair of K's. Evan Farley (Hampden, Me) pitched well in the start for Bowdoin, going 5.2 innings, allowing 4 runs on 8 hits and striking out two. Hicks had a strong game two, knocking in three for the Polar Bears.

The Eagle offense picked up where they left off game one, scoring a pair in the bottom of the first. Ethan Guerette (Sabattus, ME) got a two out single to right, and came around to score on Smith's double left. Maguire singled past the shortstop to keep the rally going and plate Smith from second.

Bowdoin came back to tie it up in the top of the third. Marquit walked and stole second, setting the table for John Lefeber (Branford, CT) who doubled to left to score the run. Matt Savard (Duxbury, MA) singled home Lefeber, and the Polar Bears climbed back to tie game. The rally got to Dvilinsky, who threw a couple of wild pitches to get himself into a jam, but he stood up to the pressure and got a fly-out to end the inning.

The Polar Bears kept the offense going in the top of the 5th, plating three runs to take their first lead of the double header. Jordan Edgett (Lynn, MA) singled to right center to start of the inning, and Garner and Gorman followed suit with singles of their own to load the bases for Bowdoin. After an infield fly to pick up the first out of the inning, but Joe Comizo (Vienna, VA) got a two-RBI single to break open the inning. Hicks got a sac-fly to keep the rally going; that was it for Bowdoin in the inning, but the damage was done, and they led 5-2.

Husson kept fighting, and clawed away at the lead, getting two back in the 6th. Maguire singled again past the shortstop with one out in the inning, and Vanidestine got him into scoring position with a double into the gap in right center. Crews got the RBI on a ground out to short, and junior catcher Kevin Rennick (Lincoln, RI) singled up the middle to bring in Vanidestine, and the Eagles were within one.

Hicks came through for Bowdoin in the top of the 7th, hitting a double with two outs that plated two runners to add some insurance for the Polar Bears. Marquit tacked on one more with a single to right that scored Hicks, giving Bowdoin a 4 run lead heading into the last at bats for the Eagles. Bangor native Ian Edwards came in for a non-save opportunity with a 4 run edge in the last inning. He struck out McInnis to start things off, but his crisp slider got away from the catcher and McInnis reached base. After another strikeout and a single, Edwards got his high school teammate, Vanidestine to ground into a fielder's choice that ended the game.

Husson Head Coach Jason Harvey was pleased with his team's performance in the non-conference double header. "We did some good things today, and I'm pretty happy with the split. Of course it would've been nice to get game two as well, but I liked the way our guys fought back in this one. We're doing well on some things we've struggled with earlier in the season; we're putting balls in play and avoiding strikeouts. I like where we are heading into the final conference games this weekend." His Eagles take the home diamond for the final time in the regular season this Friday for  two with Maine-Farmington. Both games of the double header will be produced by the New England School of Communications, and the television broadcast can be found on the Husson Athletics website. The first pitch of game one is scheduled for 12:00 pm. Bowdoin returns home to host rival Colby on Friday with first pitch slated for 3:00 pm.
