Husson Falls to Bates in Extra Innings

Box Score

Bangor, ME – It took an extra frame, but Bates found a way to beat the Eagles 7-5 in 10 on a sunny but chilly Monday afternoon from the Winkin Sports Complex. Shawn Smith led the way, going 3-6 with an RBI, and Tom Crews (Bangor, ME) went 2-4 with a homer and a pair of RBI and also gunned down a runner at the plate with a perfect throw from Center Field in the 2nd. Bates was led by Catcher Gordy Webb (Hampden, ME) who went 2-5 with a pair of RBI, while Kevin McGregor (Randolph, NJ) had the eye at the dish, picking up 4 free passes from the 8 Husson pitchers who toed the rubber.

Daniel Beatham (Dexter, ME) got the nod for the Eagles, throwing two scoreless innings while striking out 3 and allowing just one hit. Bates jumped out to take the lead in the 3rd, plating a pair on a bases loaded ground-rule double in the gap that would skip off the turf and over the retaining wall. After a walk to load the bases, Husson spun a double play to end the inning.

In the fourth, the Eagles would strike back as Jake Arthers (Belfast, ME) singled to set the table for Crews who homered to tie the game at 2. The next inning, Arthers doubled with two runners on, plating Ethan Guerette (Sabattus, ME) for the first Husson lead of the day.

In the 6th inning Bates would tie the game once again on a 2 out single by Pat Murphy (Cape Elizabeth, ME) that scored Mike Ciummei (Acton, MA). The Bearcats took the lead in the top of the 7th on a Griff Tewksbury (Concord, NH) ground rule double that plated McGregor who walked two batters earlier and in the 8th they'd add another and Bates went up 5-3.

The Eagles responded in the 8th, with two outs Kyle Vanidestine (Bangor, ME) singled to Center Field. The next batter was Guerette who walked, setting up Smith who singled in one, and on a Bearcat throwing error, Husson tied the game.

In the top of the 9th, Bates had two on after Webb hit Bates' third ground rule double of the night, forcing the Eagles to turn to their closer, Kyle Leeman (Bangor, ME) who closed the door, striking out two and getting out of the jam.

Husson got a runner on board in the bottom of the 9th, but couldn't get him across, and the game went to 10. Bates got the bases loaded with two outs in the top of the 10th and sent their Webb to the plate. With a 2-2 count, it appeared to everyone except plate umpire Bill Patterson that Leeman had him rung up (even Webb had taken a few steps toward the Bates dugout). The Bearcat Catcher took advantage of the extra pitch and put a tough ball into play between short and third which the Eagle infield couldn't handle, and when the dust settled, the error plated two runs for the visitors. Husson got two runners on base in the 10th but couldn't get them across, and the score went final 7-5.

Noah Lynd (Meriden, NH) who started the game as the DH, and came in to pitch the 9th and 10th earned the win for Bates, his second of the year. Leeman picked up the loss to go to 2-1.

The Eagles return to action Thursday when they travel to St. Joseph's for another 9 inning contest that starts at 4:00 pm. Husson returns home for a pair of double headers this weekend to open up North Atlantic Conference beginning Saturday at noon (game 2 at 2:30, same schedule on Sunday). The Bobcats take the diamond again on Friday, traveling to Tufts for a conference game beginning at 4.
