BRUNSWICK, ME - The Bowdoin College women's basketball team broke its brief two-game losing streak in a big way on Tuesday evening, defeating Husson 99-64 in a non-conference tilt at Morrell Gymnasium.
The Eagles shot a collective 44% from the field, but were out-matched by the red-hot Polar Bears.
Amanda Gifford scored 17 points thanks to 3-5 shooting from behind the arc.
Stephanie Comstock added 10 while
Vanessa Sanderson contributed nine points off the bench.
The Polar Bears (4-2), who struggled from the field in consecutive road losses, bounced back in the friendly confines of Morrell Gym, connecting on 68% of their shots in the opening half and setting a program record with 66 first-half points en route to the win. Husson falls to 1-4 this season with the setback.
Bowdoin was led by a career-high 25 points from Ellery Gould, who broke her previous career high of 20 scored against Husson in her freshman season. Gould also had six steals and five assists in the win. Jill Henrikson (16 points, seven rebounds), Allie Piscina (15 points, three steals) and Amy Hackett (11 points) also reached double figures for the Polar Bears.
The host team scored on its first five possessions, jumping out to a 13-6 lead and never looking back. The Polar Bears mounted a 39-4 run over the middle ten minutes of the frame to take a 56-15 edge with less than five minutes remaining in the period. The 63 points by intermission shattered the previous points-in-a-half mark of 55 set in 1978 against Thomas College.
Bowdoin held a 35-23 edge on the glass and forced 26 turnovers in the win. Husson will play next at Castleton State on Friday at 7:30 pm before continuing their Vermont swing stopping off at Green Mountain College at 3:00 pm on Sunday.
