Husson Drops 1-0 Match Up with Unbeaten Chargers

Box Score

NEWLONDON, NH - The Husson University women's soccer team was unable to score, and lost 1-o to Colby-Sawyer who remains unbeaten in the North Atlantic Conference (NAC). The Chargers, who registered their ninth shutout of the season, improve to 11-5-1 overall and 7-0-1 in the NAC. The 11 wins ties a single season school record for wins. Husson drops to 7-10 overall and to 6-3 in the conference.

The game was evenly played throughout and only featured a couple of good scoring chances.

Sophomore Stephanie Huntley (Woodbury, CT) of Colby-Sawyer had a great scoring chance in the 35th minute but was denied by the near post. Huntley would try again a minute later only to be turned away by the crossbar. However, the ricochet went right to sophomore Adrienne Bender (Wakefield, RI) who ripped the ball into the back of the net, giving Colby-Sawyer the 1-0 lead. The goal was Bender's 15th of the season, which is second most in a singles season in school history.

The goal proved to be enough as the Chargers' defense held off several attacking opportunities late in the second. The game-winning goal was Bender's sixth on the season. She entered the game ranked eighth in the nation in game-winning goals.

Husson held a 7-4 edge in shots on goal - six of which came from Alexandra Laniewski (Scarborough, ME) and Emily Zurcher (Topsham, ME) who had three apiece. But the Eagles could not sneak anything by the Colby-Sawyer keeper. Shalyn Spencer (Natick, MA) earned her 11th victory of the season and made seven saves. She now ranks third on Colby-sawyer's all-time wins list with 17. Husson keeper, Jessica Poulin (Albion, ME) turned away three shots in the loss.

Husson will play at MIT in a non-conference game on Tuesday at 5:00 pm before entering the NAC postseason tournament next weekend. Colby-Sawyer hosts the conference's top team, Castleton on Wednesday at 3:30 pm in a battle for the number one seed.
