Box Score Castleton, VT - Husson University lost to Castleton in the
bottom of the eleventh inning when Ted Mills (Stockbridge, VT)
knocked home the game-winning run to walk off with the North
Eastern Athletic (NEAC) East Division Championship 6-5 on Sunday
afternoon.
The Spartans improve to 29-12
overall on the season and advance to play
SUNYIT for the NEAC conference title in a best-of-three game
series on
May 8 & 9 at Delutis Field in Rome, New York. The Eagles
season ends at
23-20 overall on the season.
Tyler Erickson (Naugatuck, CT) earned the win in relief throwing
two
scoreless innings yielding just one hit, no walks and two
strikeouts.
Dan Beatham (Dexter, ME) suffered the loss on one-and-two-thirds
innings
pitched, no hits, one earned run and two walks.
Down 5-1 in the bottom of the ninth, Castleton rallied with a
four-run
inning to even the score at 5-5.
Mills led off the inning with a walk. Pinch hitter Kurt Hewes
(Poultney, VT) notched a single to right field sending Mills to
third
base. Cesar De La Cruz (Bronx, NY) followed with an RBI
groundout
scoring Mills to make it 5-2. After David Brandt (Contoocook, NH)
walked
and Ryan Zielinski (Schenectady, NY) flew out to centerfield,
Jack
Lancelin (Chatham, NY) stroked an opposite field single down the
left
field line to make it 5-3. Manley drew a walk to load the bases
and Matt
Eisenhuth (Townshend, VT) laced a two-run single to right
centerfield to
cap the scoring.
In the top of the ninth, Kyle Vanidestine (Bangor, ME) gave the
Eagles
some breathing room at the time with a three-run home run down the
left
field line, his first homer of the tournament, to give Husson a
5-1
advantage.
In the seventh, pinch hitter Jason Smith (Milford, ME) drew a
four-pitch bases loaded walk to even the score at 1-1 and
chase
Castleton starter Billy Sisko (Weathersfield, VT) from the
contest.
After relief pitcher Matt Greene (Albany, NY) induced
Haverly-Johndro
into an infield fly pop up to Zielinski, Kyle Vanidestine (Bangor,
ME)
drew a four-pitch bases loaded walk to give the Eagles a 2-1
lead.
Greene ended Husson's threat getting Ethan Guerette (Wales,
ME) to fly
out to Lancelin in centerfield for the third out.
Castleton opened the scoring in the contest in the fifth
inning
scratching home a run with the bases loaded.
With one out, De La Cruz was thrown out at home by third baseman
Jake
Arthers (Belfast, ME) but Husson's double play chance to end
the
inning was broken up as the throw down to first by Eagles catcher
Tim
Briand-Evans (Halifax, N.S.) struck Manley in the back, bouncing
into
foul territory, to score Brandt for a 1-0 advantage.
