Box Score 2 Castleton, VT - Ken Cook (Springfield, VT) hurled a complete
game with six strikeouts in game one and Jake Arthers (Belfast, ME)
went 3-for-4 with one run scored and three RBI in game two to as
the Castleton State College baseball split a doubleheader against
Husson University, 9-2 and 6-3, in North Eastern Athletic
Conference (NEAC) East action on Saturday afternoon.
The Spartans move to 25-11 overall on the season and 13-1. The
Eagles move to 20-16 overall and 11-3 in the NEAC East.
In game one, Cook scattered eight hits on two runs (both
unearned) and no walks. Husson starter Nathan Adams (Frankfort, ME)
suffered the loss throwing four innings, giving up eight hits, nine
runs (seven earned) three walks and one strikeout. Aaron Sullivan
(Eastport, ME) finished off the contest for the Eagles pitching two
innings yielding no hits, no runs, one walk and two strikeouts.
Husson threatened in the top of the first with one out as Ethan
Guerette (Wales, ME) was hit by a pitch, advanced to second on a
throwing error from Cook and scampered to third on the failed
pickoff attempt. Cook squandered the Eagles scoring chance with
back-to-back strikeouts of Shawn Smith (Winterport, ME) and Chris
Maguire (Bucksport, ME) to keep Husson off of the scoreboard.
Castleton cracked the scoreboard in the bottom half of the first
starting the frame with consecutive walks from Ryan Zielinski
(Schenectady, NY) and Jack Lancelin (Chatham, NY). Left fielder
Billy Manley (Lowell, MA) pulled an RBI single through the left
side of the infield scoring Zielinski from second for a 1-0 lead.
Garrett Bissonnette (Lyman, ME) made it 2-0 with a sac fly to right
field.
Scoreless through the next two-and-a-half-innings of play, the
Spartans put the game away in the fourth with a five-run outburst.
First baseman Cesar De La Cruz (Bronx, NY) stroked an RBI single
up the middle plating Ted Mills (Stockbridge, VT) for a 3-0
advantage.
Zielinski placed a single into right field and De La Cruz came
around to score from second after a fielding error. Lancelin pushed
Castleton's lead to 6-0 with a two-run RBI base knock up the
middle. Matt Eisenhuth (Townshend, VT) capped off the five-run
frame with a single through the right side plating Lancelin.
After a leadoff double from Mills, shortstop Cameron Curler
(Vergennes,
VT) singled to right field to make it 8-0. Curler eventually
came around to score on a wild pitch for Castleton's ninth
run of the contest.
Husson plated two runs in the top of the seventh on an RBI
ground out from Kyle Vanidestine (Bangor, ME) and an RBI double to
right center from Guerette.
In game two, Chris Morris (Hampden, ME) earned the victory
throwing a complete game allowing eight hits, three runs (all
earned), three walks and one strikeout. Matt Greene (Albany, NY)
suffered the loss tossing three innings, giving up four hits, four
runs (all earned), four walks and one strikeout.
The Eagles opened up the scoring in the top of the second as
Arthers hit a ground-rule double to right field plating Maguire
from second. Tim Briand-Evans (Halifax, N.S.) followed with a
two-run single through the left side to make it 3-0.
Husson added another run in the third on Arthers second double
of the game scoring Tom Crews (Bangor, ME).
Lancelin cut into the Eagles lead in the bottom half of the
third with an RBI single to center putting the score at 4-1.
In the bottom of the sixth, Bissonnette lined a homer to left
field to make it 4-2 in favor of Husson. It was Bissonnette's
fourth home run of the season.
Husson tacked on two insurance runs in the top of the seventh
inning on a fielder's choice RBI from Arthers, his third of
the game, and an RBI single from Briand-Evans for a 6-2 gap.
Manley split the deficit in half with his fourth home run of the
season with one out in the bottom of the seventh but
Castleton's rally fell short as Eisenhuth lined out to center
field and Bissonnette flew out to center to end the contest.
Offensively for Husson, Briand Evans went 2-for-3 at the plate
with three runs driven in. David Brandt (Contoocook, NH) had the
Spartans only mulit-hit performance at the plate in game two going
2-for-3 with one run scored.
In relief of Greene, Dakota Aker (Scotia, NY) pitched
two-and-one-thirds-innings yielding one hit, no runs, two walks and
one strikeout. Kenny McIlroy (Kingston, Ontario) threw two-thirds
of an inning allowing three hits, two runs (all earned) with no
walks and no strikeouts. Patrick Riley (Strafford, VT) finished the
contest off throwing an inning, giving up two hits, no runs, no
walks and one strikeout.
Castleton hosts Husson tomorrow in NEAC East doubleheader action
with game one starting at 12:00 p.m.
