GORHAM, Maine -- Freshman Shawn Smith (Winterport, Maine/Hampden Academy)
had three hits and drove in four runs as Husson University pulled away in the
late innings to defeat the University of Southern Maine, 12-1, Tuesday afternoon
in a non-conference baseball at the USM Baseball Stadium.
The win extends the Eagles' winning streak to three, and improves their
record to 18-15 overall. The Huskies had their two-game winning streak snapped
to fall to 14-11.
Smith hit a two-run home run in the fifth, had an RBI single in the seventh
and an RBI triple in the ninth. Sophomores Kyle Vanidestine (Bangor, Maine) and
Cody Haverly-Johndro (Newport, Maine/Nokomis Regional) each had a pair of hits.
The Eagles also benefitted from four Huskies errors in the game.
Sophomore right-handed pitcher Nate Adams (Frankfort, Maine/Searsport) went
6.2 innings to pick up his fifth win of the season. Adams allowed four hits and
four walks while striking out two. Relievers Chris Morris (Hampden, Maine) and
Kyle Leeman (Bangor, Maine) closed out the game with 2.1 innings of hitless
relief.
USM took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI single by junior
Mike
Eaton (Sabattus, Maine/Oak Hill).
The lead lasted until the third when the Eagles tied the game on a
sacrifice fly by Ethan Guerette (Wales, Maine/Oak Hill). The Eagles grabbed the
lead for good in the fourth scoring twice. Sophomore Kevin Rennick (Lincoln,
R.I.) plated the first run with a fielder's choice, and the second run came home
on a infield throwing error.
The Eagles tallied four unearned runs in the ninth to turn the game into a
rout.
Senior
Collin Henry (Penobscot, Maine/George Stevens Academy) had two hits,
including a double, for USM. Senior southpaw
Mark Schmidt (Gorham, Maine), the
first of six USM hurlers, took the loss.
Southern Maine will travel to Standish, Maine, on Wednesday (4:00 p.m.) to
play Saint Joseph's College. Husson travels to Bowdoin College on Wednesday
(4:00 p.m.).
