Box Score BANGOR, ME—The Paul Bunyan Classic came to an end today with the Husson University Women's Eagles winning their second game against University of Maine-Presque Isle by a score of 69-50. Husson started off the game with a quick three pointer by Bethany Sevey (Sr., Skowhegan, ME) who made her next three shots in succession, giving her 10 points just 6 minutes into the half. Presque Isle's Julie Peers (So., Caswell, ME) answered Sevey's initial three pointer with a bucket of her own.
The Eagles continued to play excellent defense throughout the first half, holding the Owl's to only 6 points with 13:05. Leading the defense for the Eagles was Caitlyn Butterfield (Sr., Gorham, ME) with 4 steals. The Owls regained their composure and went on a 7-2 run.
Emily Pelletier (So., Fort Kent, ME) led the Owl's with 8 points in the first half while Megan Korhonen (Sr., Littleton, ME) grabbed 6 rebounds. Sevey and Stephanie Comstock (Fy., Bangor, ME) led the Eagles with 10 points apiece at the end of the first half, Sevey shooting 4-5 and Comstock shooting 5-6 from the floor. The score at the end of the half was 40-26 in favor of the Eagles.
It was a slow start for both teams in the second half scoring a total of 15 points between the two teams in 5 minutes. The Owls started to pick up their pace coming to within 9 points of the Eagles with just under 11:00 to play in the game. The Eagles, however, picked their momentum up late in the second half adding 29 points to the score while the Owls managed 24 points. The game would end with Stephanie Comstock leading the Eagles with 16 points, followed by Brianna Hanscom (Jr., Mattawamkeag, ME) scoring 15 points shooting 9-13 from the line, and Bethany Sevey scoring 12 points.
Emily Pelletier and Rashell Saucier (Fy., Washburn, ME) led the owls with 11 points each. The Owls shot 6-8 from the line in the game.
"I am happy we were able to win both games this weekend and were able to play everyone in both games. We look forward to a real tough opponent Tuesday playing Bowdoin, and we are improving every game," said Coach Kissy Walker after the game. The Eagles take on Bowdoin College Tuesday, December 7 at 7:00pm at home.
Quickly following the game was the announcement of the All-Classic Team for the women. The recipients were Jessie Igoe of Bates, Emily Pelletier of the University of Maine-Presque Isle, Jen Colpitts from the University of Maine-Fort Kent, and Brianna Hanscom from Husson University. The MVP of the Paul Bunyan Classic was Meredith Kelly of Bates.
In the third game of the Paul Bunyan Tournament, Bates College took on U. Maine at Fort Kent, running away with an 83-24 victory. UMFK turned the ball over 22 times and could not get back in transition, allowing Bates to score easily. Bates shot 47.9% from the field, while UMFK shot 14.3%.
Bates started the game off with a quick 10-2 run, scoring their points off early UMFK turnovers on the fast break. UMFK got in the paint and drew early fouls, but could not come through at the free throw line, starting the game 1-6. After 10 minutes of play, Bates lead 22-3, and at halftime Bates lead 47-12.
In the second half, UMFK came out better defensively, stopping Bates from scoring easy buckets, but early fouls and turnovers kept them out of the game. UMFK had good shot opportunities, but the ball just didn't seem to fall for them today as they went 8-56 from the field and 8-17 from the free throw line.
Bates College's scoring was even for the most part. They had three players at 10, two at 9, and three at 8. Taryn O'Connell (SO, Georgetown, MA), Meredith Kelly (FY, Cohasset, MA), and Brianna Hawkins (SO, South Portland, ME) were the three with 10 points. Kelly also grabbed 5 rebounds and had 2 steals.
For UMFK, Maliesha Caesar (JR, Cayon, St. Kitts) scored 7 points (2-10 FG) and grabbed 12 rebounds. Quintina Young (JR, Portland, ME) was the next top scorer with 6 (1-14 FG). Guard Amber Garrison (SR, Oroville, CA) found the open players well, but the ball was just not falling today.
