Bangor, ME - The Husson University Eagles fell to the #8
University of Southern Maine Huskies, 4-1 in a nine inning game at
the John Winkin Complex on Wednesday. The Eagles got on the
board first in the fourth inning, however the Huskies would go on
to score four unanswered runs. USM improves to 16-3 on the
season, while Husson falls to 17-11.
After a scoreless first inning the Huskies were threatening in
the top of the second with a runner on third and two outs, but
Chris Morris (Jr. Hampden, ME) painted the outside corner with a
fastball for the strikeout to retire the side.
The Huskies threatened in the top of the fourth, putting a
runner on third with one out. After a big strikeout by
Morris, Colin Henry (Jr. Penobscot, ME) walked and stole second to
put two men in scoring position. Morris got out the inning
with a groundout to third.
Jake Arthers (Fy. Belfast, ME) led off the bottom of the fourth
with a single. After a sacrifice bunt and a fielder's choice,
Arthers was on third with two outs. Kyle Vanidestine (Fy.
Bangor, ME) hit a high chopper to third base and beat out the throw
for an RBI infield single, giving the Eagles a 1-0 lead after four
innings of play.
The Huskies would answer as Josh Mackey (Jr. Danvers, MA) led
off the top of the sixth inning with a double down the left field
line. Chris Burleson (Sr. Portland, ME) then hit a RBI single
just over the second basemen's head to tie up the game.
Anthony D'Alfonso (Sr. Westbrook, ME) then stepped to the plate and
ripped a line-drive single to right field that brought Burleson in
from second, giving the Huskies a 2-1 lead. After a walk,
Morris was able to retire the next three batters to get out of the
inning.
USM would add two more runs in the seventh on RBI singles by
D'Alfonso and Ryan Pike (Sr. Saco, ME). Husson look to rally
in the bottom of the eighth with two outs and the bases loaded but
USM centerfielder Pike would make a great sliding catch to get the
Huskies out of the inning.
Brennan Perry (Fy. Hampden, ME) picked up the win, improving his
record to 2-0 on the season. Perry went five innings, giving
up one run on five hits, four walks and five strikeouts. Mike
Eaton (So. Sabattus, ME) gets the save, pitching a one, two, three
ninth inning. Morris gets his first loss of the season,
falling to 3-1. Morris went 6 2/3rd innings,
giving up two runs on five hits, two walks, while striking out two.
