Bangor, ME - Husson University completed the weekend sweep over Lyndon State by beating them 6-5 in the first game and 20-1 in the second game. The Eagles scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh of the first to rally past the Hornets. The Eagles took a 7-0 lead in the first inning of the second game and never looked back. Husson improves to 17-10 overall and 5-3 in North Atlantic Conference play. Lyndon State falls to 0-9-1 overall and 0-4 in NAC play.
In the first game, the Eagles started off the scoring for the day in the bottom of the first inning. Kyle Vanidestine (Fy. Bangor, ME) lead off the inning, reaching on an infield error. Vanidestine would steal second and reach third on a pass ball. Vanidestine would score on a Chris Maguire (So. Orland, ME) RBI fielder's choice.
In the top of the second Lyndon State would take their first lead of the weekend as they took advantage of a Husson throwing error to score two unearned runs. Max Gosselin (Jr. Rehoboth, MA) started the inning ripping a double to the left-center gap. Ryan Wimble (Sr. St. Albans, VT) then had a bloop single to center to put runners on first and second with no outs. Jeremy Rocheleau (Fy. Fairfax, VT) laid down a sac bunt, but the Eagles would make a throwing error which scored two Hornets, giving them the lead 2-1. The Eagles would settle down and limit the damage as retired three of the next four batters to get out of the inning.
In the bottom of the second, Dennis Graham (Jr. Miramichi Valley, CN) would get the inning started with a line drive single to left. Tom Crews (So. Bangor, ME) would then reach on a bunt single. Billy Shannon (Sr. Newburgh, ME) would then move the runners to second and third on a sac bunt. Graham would score on a Cody Haverly-Johndro (Fy. Newport, ME) RBI fielder's choice to shortstop, evening the game at 2-2.
In the top of the third Ben Clark (Jr. Brattleboro, VT) would reach on an infield error to start the inning. Stetson Hicks (Fy. Whitefield, NH) would hit a single down the left field line, scoring Clark from second. Husson would minimize the damage with great defense as they turned a 4-6-3 double play. In the bottom of the inning the Eagles would take the lead with a crushed two-run homerun to leftfield by Nick Arthers (Sr. Belfast, ME).
In the top of the fourth inning Ryan Arsenault (So. Portland, ME) would start to take over as he struck out the side. In the fifth inning Arsenault would retire the side in order, including two strikeouts. In the top of the seventh the Hornets started off the inning with a single by Andrew Robbins (So. Windsor, VT) and an RBI triple to left-center by Zach Maerder (Fy. Woodsville, NH). Josh Fletcher (Jr. Richford, VT) would bring Maerder in on a sac fly to left field. Arsenault would let up two more singles but would get out of the inning by striking out a batter on a curveball.
In the bottom of the seventh with the Eagles down one, Vanidestine lead off the inning with a single. After a sac bunt, Vanidestine moved to third on a ground ball. With two outs and the tying run on third, N. Arthers crushed a ground rule double to dead center field. Now with the winning run on second with two outs, Jeff Miller (Sr. Brewer, ME) stepped to the plate and ripped a game winning RBI double to right-center field, as the Eagles won 6-5.
Arsenault picked up the complete game win giving up five runs, only two earned runs on nine hits, one walk and seven strikeouts. Arsenault picks up his third complete game and improves to 2-3 with the victory.
In the second game, the Eagles picked up right where they left off. After a scoreless top of the first which included two strikeouts for Husson pitcher Nate Adams (Fy. Frankfort, ME), the Eagles rallied for seven runs in the bottom of the inning. Vanidestine once again started the inning off with a leadoff single. Maguire then hit Vanidestine in with an RBI single. N. Arthers would step in and hit his second two-run homerun of the day. Miller kept the rally going with a double, stole third and scored on an over throw. Haverly-Johndro would bat in two of his own with a two RBI double down the left field line. Vanidestine would then bat in Haverly-Johndro with his second single of the inning.
Husson would add two runs in the second and seven in the third, highlighted by a perfect hit and run, giving Ethan Guerette (So. Sabattus, ME) a double and scoring Vanidestine from first base. Husson went on to win 20-1.
Adams improved his record to (3-2) as he gave up one run on five hits and two walks, while striking out 11.
