Bangor, ME - The Husson University baseball
team set a record today with their 5-3 win over Colby
College. The Eagles won their 28th game of the
season, which is the most wins a Husson baseball team has ever had
in one season. Husson ends their regular season with a 28-11
record. Colby College falls to 5-22.
Husson's starting pitcher Chris Morris (Jr. Hampden,
ME) kept his great season going in the top of the first
inning, as he had a one, two, three inning. In the bottom of
the inning, Kyle Vanidestine (Fy. Bangor, ME) led
off with a walk. Ethan Guerette (So. Sabattus,
ME) then hit Vanidestine in with a RBI double that went
all the way to the left field fence. After an infield error,
Nick Arthers (Sr. Belfast, ME) singled to left
that scored Guerrette from third. After a walk, Dennis Graham
(Jr. Miramichi, CN) would hit a sacrifice fly to
right field. The Eagles would add another run on a throwing
error as they took a 4-0 lead into the second inning.
In the top of the third, Brandon Nieuw (Fy. Port
Chester, NY) reached on an infield error and advanced to
second. John Lerner (So. Canton, MA) then
stepped up and ripped a double to left-center field, scoring
Nieuw. After a sacrifice bunt, Craig Cooper (Sr.
Trumbull, CT) would hit a bloop RBI single to left field,
cutting Husson's lead to 4-2.
Arthers lead off the bottom of the third with a double to the
right-center gap. Jeff Miller (Sr. Veazie,
ME) would then single and steal second to put two Eagles
in scoring position with no outs. Graham would then walk to
load the bases. However, the Mules would turn a 1-2-3 double
play and get a ground out to get out of the inning unharmed.
In the bottom of the fourth the Eagles would once again leave the
bases loaded without getting a run.
In the top of the eighth with the score 5-2, the Mules started
off the inning with two singles by John LaMantia (Jr.
Gates, Mills, OH) and Cooper. Kyle McKay
(Sr. Bedford, NH) would then step up and hit a
single to center, scoring LaMantia. However, Morris would get
out of the inning with a fly ball to center and a 5-3 groundball
double play.
Morris went eight innings in getting the 5-3 win. Morris
improves to 5-2 on the season. Dan Beatham (So.
Dexter, ME) pitched a one, two, three ninth inning to pick
up his second save of the season.
