Bangor, ME - The Husson University Eagles and the Castleton State College Spartans split in their NAC double header on Sunday. Husson took the first game 6-3, lead by a complete game performance from pitcher Chris Pease. The Spartans took the second game 7-4, lead by a complete game performance from pitcher Billy Sisko.
In the first game, came from behind as they scored the last six runs of the game to defeat Castleton in a North Atlantic Conference game 6-3. Castleton lead-off batter David Raczka led off the game with a double to left-center field. Kyle Brooks would then hit Raczka in with an RBI single to right field. In top of the second the Spartans would get another leadoff double, this time from right fielder Garrett Bissonnette. Bissonnette would then score on an RBI single by Ted Mills. The Spartans would go on to score another run in the top of the second, taking a 3-0 lead.
From there the Eagles would take over, scoring the last six runs of the game. Nick Arthurs led off the bottom of the second with a double off the wall in left-center. Dennis Graham would then reach on a throwing error and Arthurs would come around to score. Graham would then score on a sac fly by Tom Crews, cutting the lead to 3-2. After a scoreless third inning, the Eagles would take advantage of three Castleton errors. Jeff Miller reached on an error to start the inning. Tom Crews would then single to center and Miller would score on a fielding error. Cody Haverly-Johndro would then reach on an error, which would also score Crews, giving Husson a 4-3 lead.
Ethan Guerrette would lead off the bottom of the fifth inning with a single and reach second and third on two wild pitches. Guerrette would end up scoring on an infield error, giving the Eagles a 5-3 lead. In the bottom of the sixth, the Eagles would add another insurance run as Miller led off with a triple and was hit home by a Crews' single.
Chris Pease picked up the complete game win, improving his record to 3-1. Pease retired 10 out of the last 12 Spartan batters to help seal the game. Pease went all seven innings giving up seven hits, one walk and two earned runs. Pease finished with three strikeouts.
Will LaRose picks up the loss as he went five innings, giving up five runs, only two earned runs on six hits and no walks. LaRose finished with five strikeouts.
In the second game, the Spartans rallied to score three runs in the sixth and seventh inning to take the second game of the double header. Pitcher Billy Sisko picked up the win going the distance, pitching all seven innings, giving up four runs on six hits, five walks, while striking out eight. Kyle Leeman falls to 2-2 on the season as he went five innings giving up three runs on eight hits, two walks, while striking out two.
After a scoreless first two innings, the Eagles got on the board first scoring in the bottom of the third. Kyle Vanidestine led the inning off with a walk, stole second and scored on an RBI single to center by Nick Arthurs. In the top of the fourth, Dan Conley doubled to left center and scored on an RBI single by Garrett Bissonnette, tying the game at one apiece.
After a scoreless fifth inning the Spartans would rally in the sixth. Kyle Brooks led off the inning with a line drive to right field. Conley then singled to center. After a walk, Ted Mills drove Brooks home on a fielder's choice, giving the Spartans a 2-1 lead. The Spartans would go on to walk three more times in the sixth and score two more runs to take a 4-1 lead. In the bottom of the sixth Chris Maguire started off the inning with a single to right field. Maguire would later score on an RBI ground rule double to left-center by Dennis Graham.
The Spartans would put away the game in the top of the seventh as they added three more runs. Husson would try to rally but were only able to score two runs in the bottom of the seventh, losing 7-4.
The Eagles next game is March 31st at Bates College at 3:00 pm.
