STANDISH, ME - Husson University Field Hockey upset St. Joseph's
in the North Atlantic Conference Semifinal match winning 2-1 on
penalty strokes. With no time remaining in regulation play,
Skye Ellis (Jr., Belfast, ME) scored a game-tying goal off a
penalty corner propelling Husson into overtime. After two
scoreless overtimes and one hundred minutes of play, Husson
outscored St. Joseph's on penalty strokes to advance to the NAC
Championship. Husson will vie for the NAC title against
University of Maine at Farmington on November 7.
With 00:00 showing on the clock and St. Joseph's in possession
of a 1-0 lead, the Eagles were awarded a penalty corner.
Husson forward Courtney Allen (Jr., Gardiner, ME) sent the
corner pass from the right side into a cluster of green and white.
Ellis gained control of the ball and punched it past St. Joseph's
goalie Meaghan Johnson (Jr., Portland, ME) to the left corner
of the net, sending the game to overtime. Per NCAA rules, the game
shall be prolonged to permit the completion of a penalty corner at
halftime and fulltime.
After two scoreless overtime periods, the game was to be decided
by penalty strokes. As the penalty strokes commenced, both
St. Josephs' and Husson's goalkeepers made saves on the first round
attempts. The tally was set at 2-2 after both clubs
converted their shots in the second and third rounds. In the
fourth round, Husson defender Caroline Bochtler (So., Turner, ME)
converted her penalty stroke into a goal, and Husson's Kristen
Capen (Fy., Leeds, ME) made a key save to put the Eagles up 3-2
with one round remaining. Husson's Lorri Hiltz (So.,
Norridgewock, ME) sealed the victory for the Eagles with a high
shot to the left side.
Husson's Kristen Capen made a series of brilliant saves
throughout the game. With three minutes remaining in the
final overtime, Capen shut down a point-blank shot by forward Kayla
Nowell (Jr., Bridgton, ME) to keep the Eagles' hopes alive.
Capen made 12 saves on 19 shots in match play, and tallied two
pressure-packed penalty stroke saves. St. Joseph's
Johnson recorded 9 stops on 11 shots.
In an earlier meeting between the in-state rivals, St.
Joe's bested Husson, 3-2, in double-overtime at their home Lakeside
Field. Husson returned to Lakeside Field today to earn a win and
move forward to the championship game, making it six straight wins
for the young squad and first year coach, Katie Flaherty.
Husson will play Saturday at 1:00 at third-seeded University of
Maine-Farmington (who scored an upset win over Castleton today) to
advance to the NAC Championship game.
Saturday's winner advances to the NCAA tournament.
