Field Hockey Flies Into NAC Championship Game

Box Score

STANDISH, ME - Husson University Field Hockey upset St. Joseph's in the North Atlantic Conference Semifinal match winning 2-1 on penalty strokes.  With no time remaining in regulation play, Skye Ellis (Jr., Belfast, ME) scored a game-tying goal off a penalty corner propelling Husson into overtime.  After two scoreless overtimes and one hundred minutes of play, Husson outscored St. Joseph's on penalty strokes to advance to the NAC Championship.   Husson will vie for the NAC title against University of Maine at Farmington on November 7.

With 00:00 showing on the clock and St. Joseph's in possession of a 1-0 lead, the Eagles were awarded a penalty corner.  Husson forward Courtney Allen  (Jr., Gardiner, ME) sent the corner pass from the right side into a cluster of green and white. Ellis gained control of the ball and punched it past St. Joseph's goalie Meaghan Johnson  (Jr., Portland, ME) to the left corner of the net, sending the game to overtime. Per NCAA rules, the game shall be prolonged to permit the completion of a penalty corner at halftime and fulltime.

After two scoreless overtime periods, the game was to be decided by penalty strokes.  As the penalty strokes commenced, both St. Josephs' and Husson's goalkeepers made saves on the first round attempts.  The tally was set at 2-2 after both clubs converted their shots in the second and third rounds.  In the fourth round, Husson defender Caroline Bochtler (So., Turner, ME) converted her penalty stroke into a goal, and Husson's Kristen Capen (Fy., Leeds, ME) made a key save to put the Eagles up 3-2 with one round remaining.   Husson's Lorri Hiltz (So., Norridgewock, ME) sealed the victory for the Eagles with a high shot to the left side.

Husson's Kristen Capen made a series of brilliant saves throughout the game.  With three minutes remaining in the final overtime, Capen shut down a point-blank shot by forward Kayla Nowell (Jr., Bridgton, ME) to keep the Eagles' hopes alive.  Capen made 12 saves on 19 shots in match play, and tallied two pressure-packed penalty stroke saves.   St. Joseph's Johnson recorded 9 stops on 11 shots.

In an earlier meeting between the in-state rivals, St. Joe's bested Husson, 3-2, in double-overtime at their home Lakeside Field. Husson returned to Lakeside Field today to earn a win and move forward to the championship game, making it six straight wins for the young squad and first year coach, Katie Flaherty.

Husson will play Saturday at 1:00 at third-seeded University of Maine-Farmington (who scored an upset win over Castleton today) to advance to the NAC Championship game.  Saturday's winner advances to the NCAA tournament.
