Martel, a native of Lewiston, Maine, graduated from Lewiston High School in 2006 after a stellar high school career, where she scored a total of 87 goals and 33 assists for a whopping 207 points. She was named the Class A Player of the Year in the State of Maine her senior year, and was also honored as an NSCAA/Adidas Girls High School All-American. She attended the University of Maine beginning in the fall of 2006, graduating in 2010 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology and Physical Education. She was a member of the Balck Bears varsity soccer team for all four of her years at Orono. She hit the pitch running as soon as she set foot on campus and was named to the America East All Rookie Team as a freshman. After fighting through injuries throughout her collegiate career, she battled back for an extremely successful senior season in which she started 17 games, scoring 13 goals and 1 assist for 27 points. That year she was named the America East Striker of the Year and selected to the America East All Conference First Team. 

Following graduation, Laura went on to play professionally in the fall of 2010 for The Quebec City Amiral (Amiral de Quabec) of the USL W-League. At Husson, Laura will serve as the Women's Soccer Assistant Coach and her primary responsibilities are as Goalkeeper Coach and Recruiting Coordinator.
