The 2012 season marks Sean Murphy’s second at the helm of the Husson football program after spending his first year with the Eagles serving as the Associate Head Coach and Defensive Coordinator. In addition to his role as the football coach, Murphy is an Assistant Director of Athletics overseeing Strength and Conditioning for all athletic programs and the Clara Swan Fitness Center.
Throughout his career, Coach Murphy has served in multiple capacities as a football, lacrosse, and certified strength and conditioning coach at the collegiate and high school levels, including stops at Dickinson College (PA), Bowdoin College (ME), and Plymouth State University (NH). Most recently at The Bullis School in Maryland, Murphy spent two years rebuilding a historically strong football program that had struggled in recent years. As a teacher and Head Football Coach, he mentored five All-Interstate Athletic Conference players, two Greater DC Super 60 athletes, and a National Football Foundation Scholar-Athlete.
Prior to Bullis, Coach Murphy spent four years as the Co-Defensive Coordinator/Linebackers Coach at Dickinson while assisting with the lacrosse program and overseeing the strength and conditioning efforts for all sports. In that time the football team saw great success featuring two Centennial Conference Championships (2004, 2006), an NCAA tournament appearance, and an ECAC Southwest Bowl Championship (2007). Under his tutelage, four linebackers received All-Centennial Conference honors, one of which was named CC Defensive Player of the Year and a Gagliardi Trophy Finalist (awarded to the top Division III player in the country).
Before Dickinson, Murphy spent three years at Bowdoin, where he gained valuable experience as the Wide Receivers Coach for two seasons before transitioning to Defensive Backs. He began his coaching career at Plymouth State as the Defensive Line Coach after completing a four year playing career for the Panther Football and Lacrosse teams.
The Eliot, Maine native was a four year letter winner in both sports at Plymouth, twice earning First-Team All-Conference honors in football as well as All-New England, Football Gazette All-East Region, and Honorable Mention All-American recognition. As a lacrosse player, Murphy also received First-Team All-League recognition as a senior tri-captain.
Coach Murphy earned a BS in Physical Education and Recreation from Plymouth, a MS in Exercise Science from California University of Pennsylvania, and is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist. Sean resides in Hampden with his wife Amie and their three children, Amelia, Seamus and Keegan.
