Sam Weiss enters his second season working with the Husson University football program in 2021 as the outside linebackers coach.
PREVIOUSLY:
Weiss joined the HU coaching staff in the fall of 2019 after spending the past four seasons (2015-18) coaching professional football for the Marburg Mercenaries of the German Football League (GFL). He spent his first season coaching the Mercenaries’ defensive backs and playing free safety and middle linebacker in 2015 before being promoted to defensive coordinator in 2016.
During his time on the Mercenaries coaching staff, Weiss coached former Florida Gators linebacker Michael Taylor, who was the leading tackler in the GFL. He also coached former Texas Longhorn linebacker Peter Jinkens and Eastern Michigan and Seattle Seahawks linebacker Neal Howey as well. In his second season (2017) as the Mercenaries defensive coordinator he help them make the playoffs for the first time in three years and finished 2017 as the No. 13-ranked team in all of Europe and the 7th best in Germany.
Prior to coaching overseas, Weiss spent the 2014 season as the cornerbacks coach at Bates College. While at Bates, Weiss helped the Bobcats win the Colby, Bates, Bowdoin Championship and finished with a 4-4 record in the NESCAC.
PERSONAL:
Weiss was a four-year letterwinner on the Springfield College football team as an defensive back from 2010-13 and started at free safety in his juinor and senior seasons. During his career, the Pride posted a four-year record of 30-12 (.714), including a 15-10 (.600) mark in Liberty League play with three appearances in Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) bowl games.
He finished his career with 139 tackles (101 unassisted, 38 assisted, and five for loss), 0.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, and eight interceptions in 31 career games played. Weiss is Springfield’s all-time career leader in interception return yards with 239.
In his senior season, Weiss led the Pride to the 2013 ECAC North Atlantic Bowl Championship and was named to the Liberty League All-Conference First Team and ECAC Division III Football North All-Star Second Team. A captain in Springfield’s secondary, Weiss finished the season with a team-best 71 tackles, including 47 solo stops, to go along with five pass break-ups and three interceptions, including a 93-yard pick he returned for a touchdown at Mount Ida.
He was also named to the All-Liberty League Second Team defense his junior season.
Weiss earned a Bachelor of Science in Recreation Management from Springfield in 2014.
A native of Rockland, Maine, Weiss attended Rockland District High School. He currently lives in Bangor, Maine.
