Gerfen posts brace in women’s soccer’s season opening victory at Saint Joseph’s

STANDISH, Maine — The Husson University women's soccer team opened its 2026 season in impressive fashion, scoring three second-half goals to secure a 3-0 victory over Saint Joseph's College of Maine on Friday evening at the Saint Joseph's Athletics Complex.

After a scoreless opening half, the Eagles (1-0) broke through early in the second half. Senior Emma Nicholson put Husson on the board in the 65th minute, finding the back of the net to give the Eagles a 1-0 advantage.

Husson continued to apply pressure and doubled its lead just over two minutes later. Sophomore Thea Gerfen converted a penalty kick in the 67th minute to make it a 2-0 contest with the tally being Gerfen's first as an Eagle.

The Eagles continued to control the match following Gerfen's first goal, generating several more scoring opportunities and earning additional corner kicks. Gerfen struck again in the 76th minute, converting another penalty kick to complete her brace and extend Husson's advantage to 3-0.

Husson's defense took care of the rest, limiting Saint Joseph's (0-2) to just three shots and two shots on goal throughout the contest. Sophomore Gabriella Smith made two saves to record the shutout in her season debut.

The Eagles controlled the offensive play from the opening whistle, outshooting the Monks 17-3 and holding a 13-1 advantage in corner kicks. Husson also put 15 of its 17 shots on target, forcing Saint Joseph's goalkeeper Ashlyn Guerette to make 12 saves.

Gerfen led the Eagles with two goals on four shots, putting all four of her attempts on frame. Nicholson added a goal on four shots, with all four attempts also finding the target.

Husson returns to action on Sunday when it plays its first home contest of the season against RV University of Wisconsin-La Crosse at 11 a.m.
