BANGOR, Maine — Five different Eagles scored and sophomore Ella Duchette recorded four saves as the Husson University field hockey team earned a 5-0 victory over Vermont State University Castleton in non-conference action Saturday at the Winkin Complex.
Husson (2-5) applied pressure early, with sophomore Lauren Millett forcing Castleton goalkeeper Izabella Cosden into a save following a penalty corner in the third minute. Just 12 seconds later, sophomore Maddie Morin opened the scoring with an unassisted goal at 2:53 to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead.
The Eagles controlled the opening quarter, outshooting the Spartans (2-5) by a 5-0 margin while earning four penalty corners.
Castleton generated opportunities midway through the second quarter, but Duchette protected Husson's advantage. She stopped Gwyn Vincent's attempt in the 21st minute before denying Ava Laross in the 22nd minute to keep the Spartans off the scoreboard.
Junior Mary Hamblin doubled the Eagles' lead at 26:32, scoring off an assist from senior Tessa Capozzoli following a penalty corner. Husson carried the 2-0 advantage into halftime after outshooting Castleton 8-3 over the opening 30 minutes.
The Eagles pulled away with three goals in the third quarter. After a series of penalty corners, freshman Grace Allen scored off an assist from Morin at 37:19 to extend the lead to 3-0.
Just 51 seconds later, junior Brianna Smith finished off a feed from Hamblin to give Husson a four-goal advantage.
Duchette turned away another Spartans attempt in the 40th minute before the Eagles added their final goal at the end of the quarter. Sophomore Addie Twitchell scored off an assist from senior Elisa Picariello on a penalty corner at the end of the third quarter, sending Husson into the final quarter ahead 5-0.
The Eagles' defense held firm over the final 15 minutes, keeping Castleton scoreless despite six Spartan penalty corners. Duchette stopped Laross once more in the 52nd minute and finished with four saves over 60 minutes to earn the shutout, her first of the season.
Morin and Hamblin each contributed a goal and an assist, while Capozzoli and Picariello added an assist apiece. Capozzoli led Husson with four shots, including three on goal, while Hamblin recorded three attempts with two on target.
Husson will return to the road Wednesday when it visits Springfield College for a 6:30 p.m. matchup.
