BANGOR, Maine — The Husson University volleyball team earned its first victory of the season Tuesday evening, sweeping the University of Maine at Fort Kent 3-0 at Newman Athletic Gymnasium to give head coach Sue Medley her first win at the helm of the Eagles.
Husson (1-8) defeated the Bengals (0-3) by set scores of 25-15, 25-10 and 25-17 behind a double-double from senior Janna Preskorn, who finished with a match-high 15 kills, 15 digs and four service aces. Preskorn hit .481 and added two block assists in the victory.
The Eagles overcame an early 3-0 deficit in the opening set, using a six-point run to build an 11-5 advantage. Sophomore Peyton Hooker recorded six kills in the frame, while Preskorn delivered the final point to secure the 25-15 win.
Husson carried that momentum into the second set, hitting .308 with 11 kills and just three attack errors. Leading 18-9, the Eagles won six consecutive points, including back-to-back aces from freshman Eden Fraser, before closing out the set 25-10.
The third set was tied at 9-9 before Husson scored three straight points to move ahead for good. Preskorn added seven kills in the final frame as the Eagles completed the sweep with a 25-17 victory.
Fraser directed the offense with a match-high 31 assists to go along with eight digs and three aces. Freshman Kiara Griffin paced Husson with 17 digs, while junior Lilly Andreasen contributed eight kills on .350 hitting and 12 digs. Hooker finished with nine kills and six digs.
Husson totaled 37 kills, 61 digs and nine aces, hitting .253 while holding UMaine-Fort Kent to a -.084 hitting percentage.
Husson returns to action Saturday in Gorham, Maine, at the University of Southern Maine Tri-Match. The Eagles will face UMass Dartmouth at 2 p.m. before taking on host Southern Maine at 4 p.m.
